This game was big for me back then, I remember spending hours on the RoR Mysteries blog reading all those theories about miscarriages and such.
God that was 8 years ago.
Edit: I never knew it got so many bad publicity, now I want to dig some old brazillian magazines to see if there's anything about it.

so I started playing Rule of Rose last night and while I haven't gotten far enough to experience much of the combat, so far I love it
what we got here is a game about evil British orphans and that's awesome! it kind of seems to me a little bit like a cross between Children of The Corn and that episode of the Twilight Zone 'It's a Good Life"
and it has gorgeous graphics for a PS2 game, with very lush attention to detail and an excellent soundtrack, which makes for a very atmospheric game
overall I'm impressed, I'm glad I finally have the opportunity to play it

Well, it's a good thing I didn't inspire you to buy the game just for you to hate it... I do not do refunds.

Well, it's a good thing I didn't inspire you to buy the game just for you to hate it... I do not do refunds. well in fairness, it's been ages since I've played a survival horror title in this style that I've never played before, it was a genre I used to really enjoy that completely disappeared so even one with clunky combat is going to tickle my fancy if it's all that's left

well I finally finished the game last night and I'm ready to give my complete thoughts on this game after finally getting to play it after the better part of a decade and, in my opinion, this just might be one of the most underrated games I've ever played
first off, yes the combat can certainly be frustrating, particularly during the bossfights, but there's one thing to remember and that's the fact that this is just how survival horror games used to be made folks, before the era of action games in horror clothing and before the era of horror games where all you can do is run away these games used to unempower the player in order to make you feel intimidated and scared by the enemies in a way you wouldn't if you could easily shoot them in the face, almost as if the point is to scare you, not be a power fantasy
now is the combat in Rule of Rose as polished as it should be? no, but at least you're legitimately frightened to see the enemies knowing they're hard to kill, there are some great "oh shit" moments when you find yourself surrounded by the Imps, overall I don't think there's anything severely wrong with Rule of Rose's gameplay, provided you are a fan of survival horror gameplay
but all that aside I think the best comparison to make for this game is Killer 7, both are games that in the basic gameplay department may be lacking but are nevertheless such artistic achievements that they are still worth playing, but are less games in the traditional sense and more well, art
there is a lushness and attention to detail in Rule of Rose that you don't see very often, both the orphanage and the airship feel like real places (especially the orphanage) and not just "game levels" and everything is exquisitely designed with excellent graphics by PS2 standards and I hate saying "by PS2 standards" since let me be clear, this game is gorgeous and I say that as someone who recently played Infamous Second Son on the PS4 and while yeah, from a technical standpoint the graphics are not as good as that, but the graphics are still almost on par with Silent Hill 3's, which considering that was the best looking game on the system, is saying a lot
I love the storyline and I love piecing together the story instead of just bluntly being told it, it's like a mystery game in a way, I love the excellent music and voice acting and I love the pacing of the game, where it's not trying to be "thrill a minute", instead there are long stretches of the game in which there is no danger nor anything explicitly scary happening (but there IS always a David Lynch esque weirdness to the proceedings that make it unsettling) because it ensures that when the knives come out and something horrifying does happen it's made all the more effective by not being overdone, subtlety is the name of the game folks, this isn't Outlast where constant blood and guts are in your face, though that can be fun in it's own right, but Rule of Rose dares a different approach at horror and should be commended for that
overall if you're like me and you like classic survival horror games and also value storytelling in games as much as anything else, I highly recommend you make a note to play Rule of Rose someday, it's a game that deserves to be held in the same regard as Killer 7, Shadow of the Colossus and Silent Hill 2 in the "games as art" category

I don't remember any controversy over this in America either. And I used to get all the game magazines at the time would have been coming out. Not saying there was none at all, but if there was it wasn't much and it wasn't big and memorable, and may very well have been mainly on websites.
Hell, I only vaguely even remember hearing about the game period, let along it being controversial. SCEA passing on a game for whatever reason is nothing new and wouldn't have made much of a blip on the radar.

Does anyone know if Punchline is still around? I can't find any current information regarding the studio.

Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk it looks like they've never technically gone out of business but haven't produced anything in a long time hopefully they'll come out with another game someday, maybe they should go the kickstarter route?

Punchline doesn't exist anymore, but Kimura has a new studio called Onion Games now. His upcoming Million Onion Hotel game for the iOS was awarded two prizes at the last bitSummit. oniongames.jp/
