Wizardry V on the SNES was the first game I ever actually beat in the series, so it'll always hold a certain level of esteem in my eyes. The final boss is definitely a bitch, but that's kind of par for the course with this franchise.

I really like V on SNES. I've never done anything with the transfers, I'm not sure how much you lose with that.

If it matters to you, I was able to get a CIB for like $10. It's a really freaking cheap game.

I think it is about $5 cart only. It is like the cheapest SNES RPG I came across which also worried me. lol

Weird, Secret of the Stars used to be like the cheapest. And it kind of deserved it. For some reason it is now $30 on Amazon. But there weren't many SNES RPGs and nearly all of them have built up quite the reputation. One way or the other *cough* Mystic Quest *cough* But Wizardry V seemed to have slipped under the radar. At least the SNES version.

4 on the PC Engine has simplified puzzles compared to the original, and you have some limited control over the monstes (you can choose fight or spell, but not which spell). Enemy graphics look actually better than on PSX. The PC version of 4 routinely appears on "Most Difficult Games Ever" lists. It sounds quite unplayable.

Real men prefer the computer versions, you pansies. Have you tried playing Wizardry VI on the PC lately? It's like pulling teeth, and then gouging out your eyes with said teeth.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, everyone. It sounds like the SFC remake of I-III is definitely the way to go for those. I checked ebay and amazon and couldn't find a single copy of it - is the cart that hard to find? I ask because I'd prefer to play it on console.

Now that's an interesting question. I've honestly never seen a legit copy of this thing, either. Just did a search and couldn't find any record of it, either. Is this a ghost ROM???

Wizardry I-II-III is one of those super late Nintendo Power releases from 1999(!) like Thracia 776, so I'd guess it's a pretty rare thing.

Yeah, there's that issue. But I was assuming emulation when I recommended it, anyway, cause you can't set the original fully to English (only menus, monster and item names). Real men prefer the computer versions, you pansies. Honestly, the biggest issue with the computer versions isn't the difficulty level, excess grinding or complete lack of interface comfort. It's that you have to wait for the game to save the status after every single darned step.
