oh boy, I've been hoping that the PS4 would help Japan have a gaming revival and so far all signs seem to be pointing to that happening for one thing Japan needs to learn to just ignore the Xbox entirely in favor of a Playstation console, just like they did in the good old days, I think that was one of the things that made them run into trouble, being forced to make every game "multiplatform" and waste money on printing Xbox 360 copies when no one who only owns a 360 cares about Japanese gamesĀ point is, theĀ Demon's Souls team making a PS4 exclusive is a very good sign! I completely disagree. There's hardly only one thing to blame for the state of the Japanese industry, but the mobile market has done WAY more to dumb down their market than the Xbox ever has.

Honestly? Judging by the sword and clothing, it looks more like Pirate Souls. Civil War Souls You'd fight a hollowed Robert E. Lee in the Appomattox Court House for the final boss.

I'm not saying it was the only reason or even the main reason, I'm just saying that I'm sure it didn't help having to print copies for the 360 instead of focusing on the main platform where most of their audience lies, which in both North America and Japan has been Playstation consoles since the days of the PS1 I mean Jesus people, do you really think there's a lot of 360 only owners out there who were clamoring to play a game like for example Catherine? what exactly about Catherine needed to also be on the 360 instead of only the PS3? are there really that many Gears of War and Call of Duty players out there who are gonna buy a game with an anime girl on the cover? I mean fyi, I own a 360, but not just a 360 and I can't imagine anyone who cares about Japanese games at all would only own a friggin' Microsoft console, I mean really? bottom line, all I am saying is that it can't hurt for Japanese devs in the future to focus only on the PS4 with maybe even digital only releases if need be, that way maybe we can start seeing more games like we saw in the PS2 days, I just don't think they're gonna sell many copies on the Xbox One

I mean Jesus people, do you really think there's a lot of 360 only owners out there who were clamoring to play a game like for example Catherine? There's probably at least 100,000 360-only owners that consistently buy Japanese games in America alone. For a $60 game that's $6 million more gross income. I would hardly call that wasting money. And that's a really low estimate.

You want an example that goes totally against what you're saying? I've owned a 360 for many years now, I still have yet to buy a PS3, and I care about almost nothing BUT Japanese-developed games. Now, if you were talking about the original Xbox, I would 100% agree with you, but the 360 has served fans of Japanese games very well. In fact, many of the Japanese games on 360 either never came out on PS3 or came out significantly later, making them 360-exclusive for a good chunk of time. In my own collection, I've got games like Beautiful Katamari, Blue Dragon, Deathsmiles, Infinite Undiscovery, Otomedius Excellent, Tales of Vesperia, which never came out on PS3 (at least not in English, with Tales of Vesperia), and others, like Star Ocean 4, I didn't want to wait a whole year to be able to play on PS3 (in fact, when SO4 came out on 360, I'm not sure if anybody knew that a PS3 version was coming at all). As far as I'm concerned, the 360 nearly covered all my bases in terms of what I wanted to play, and in some ways fulfills the wants of fans of Japanese games even better than the PS3. I have picked up a few PS3 games here and there (the Yakuza games, the Hakuoki game that's coming out this month, etc.) for whenever I do get around to picking up a PS3, but I haven't felt like I've been missing much. In my eyes, the PS3 is only essential to fans of Japanese games if you want to play the big AAA stuff like Metal Gear or if you're an ultra weeaboo and need moeblob trash like Hyperdimension Neptunia. So yeah, read up on the actual history of what came out in the past generation and when before you start spouting this nonsense as if the PS3 and 360 are equivalent to the PS2 and original Xbox because they're so, sooooo not. This all said, I don't think there's anything wrong with From Software sticking with Sony. After all, this is what they've historically done.

(will it ever come out there?) and I still think it would be wise for Japanese devs to focus all their effort on the PS4

Well, most of the 360's major Japanese exclusives made their appearance in the first couple years of the system, when Microsoft was still making a big push to enter the Japanese market. When that didn't pan out they basically gave up, and since then the number of Japanese PS3 exclusives has been rising steadily. The 360 cornered the shmup market, but basically every other genre in Japanese games has much better representation on the PS3 these days*. The last few years in particular have seen a tremendous amount of Japanese PS3 exclusives, and the market for niche Japanese games is definitely stronger on the PS3. That trend is almost certainly going to continue on the PS4, particularly given the current PS4/XB1 situation.
* And to be clear, here I am very specifically referring to more niche titles. Games with significant mainstream appeal are and will continue to be multiplatform for the forseeable future, but smaller niche games (Yakuza, Tales of, Atelier, Way of the Samurai, etc) tend to be made first and foremost for the Japanese market, and thus tend to be exclusive to or have a stronger presence on the PS3.

Basing amateur sales projections off of what constitutes your image of an "Xbox owner" is kind of silly. It's probably true to say that the Playstation is going to reach a wider audience in Japan, but that's not the case here.

'Cause one of these posts is not like the other. Either way, I never said there were NO examples of either. There are some, but they're obviously in the minority (compared to the rest of From Software's history and the rest of the Xbox library, respectively). I'm also not saying that the PS3 is a bad platform for fans of Japanese games, not at all. Just that with all the multiplatform games and the exclusives, the 360 is not at all a bad choice either, and earlier on, it was the superior choice between the two, in my opinion. (It's also crazy that what I paid for my 360 six years ago is still less than what a new PS3 sells for these days.) Personally, I think both the PS4 and XboxOne look like crap from the perspective of someone who wants Japanese-developed games, but then, so did the PS3 and 360 early on too. With the market being Western-focused these days, it takes time to build up a decent selection of Japanese games (with the PS3 taking longer). And then there's the fact that a lot of Japanese games are trying to look and play like Western games too, so it's all the more difficult if you want to play Japanese games that actually feel like Japanese games. In general, I think fans of Japanese games are far better served by handhelds these days than the home consoles.
