Dan Hsu alluded to it in an EGM editor's column, although I don't remember the details. EGM 192 June 2005Yeah for some reason I still have that editorial in my mind so I ran to my mag stack to find it. I think there might have been a follow to this somewhere or I'm making that up.

so what? why do you feel the need to say this? too many gamers must get this smug sense of superiority whenever they say an acclaimed or popular game is "overrated" because it always happens every single time, a game could be the second coming of Christ and there'd still be jackasses* saying it's overrated, it kinda takes the fun out of everything, like imagine if you were a kid and you had to listen to endless jackasses* saying Super Mario Bros or Zelda A Link to the Past was overrated and you're just "buying into the hype" there's plenty of popular games I'm not fond of but I don't feel the need to constantly point that out and for the record I would say that TLoU is a pretty great game, in an era of cookie cutter games with perfunctory storytelling TLoU is a game where the story is as important as anything else and the gameplay is not the typical shoot-em-up stuff, that alone is worthy of praise **note I am not calling you directly a jackass, just these other guys I see on websites I think you're placing too much value on your own opinion and not enough on that of others. What does it matter if someone thinks differently than you? It doesn't change your enjoyment of the things you like. What does it matter if someone says something sucks but doesn't back it up with a set of fair justifications? We as human beings are irrational. Oftentimes we dislike things without giving them a fair shot first. That's not a crime. There's no requirement to life that says you have to really give something a chance before you decide it's not for you.

Let's not forget that "review copies" are a thing, and it's not unusual to be blackballed and denied such copies if you badmouth a respective company or one of their games.

Nothing but good could come from that kind of approach! Comments aren't a way to meet new friends. They're a way to realize that an STD can transmit across the internet.

Well as long as we are sharing I like Hardcoregamer for my news. Which I happened upon by accident when searching for this site on my mobile. Doesn't look like it gets a whole lot of traffic as most of the stories only have a comment or two. They do post a lot about niche JRPG stuff so I get most of my news on that there. I really don't enjoy reading opinion articles other than the occasional "hidden gems" or such list so all I want out of my news site is news. If I want to read opinions I just come to these forums. Lesse. Frequent RPGFan for reviews. They tend to be more forgiving than other sites but so am I when it comes to my favorite genre.

I frequent RPGFan too, but nowadays it seems mostly out of habit. Their reviews use the "60% is just below average" scale which I don't like (and the editorial they posted regarding it did nothing to explain or defend their reasoning behind it), and sometimes their reviews can come off biased or poorly researched. Their Knights in the Nightmare PSP review for example mentions not having "half the screen blocked by your hand" as one of the reasons the PSP version controls better, when all the important stuff in the DS version was actually on the top screen with the touchscreen serving as something like a PC tablet. (It could be that the reviewer just holds a DS and/or stylus in an odd way, but he should note that in his review if that's the case ). They do cover visual novels and adventure games in addition to RPGs though, which I appreciate.

I don't do this in the comments of any TLoU articles (because I just don't post comments, full stop) but for the record, The Last of Us is mega-hyper-super-colossal overrated. There. I said it. I felt really good. so what? why do you feel the need to say this? too many gamers must get this smug sense of superiority whenever they say an acclaimed or popular game is "overrated" because it always happens every single time, a game could be the second coming of Christ and there'd still be jackasses* saying it's overratedĀ I might be a nay pisser at times, but that' s more out of frustration of the situation then About finding myself superior, if Anything my taste is just not Currently in tune with others. But games like last of us, and the current hype for watching series (especially that all series are somehow benchmarked and all feel part of the same problem, even affects anime and manga's, interesting stuff is so rare nowadays, luckily there's ninja slayer and the new ninja scrolls to look forward too).

This seems to have started an interesting discussion. All Games Beta is my website of choice for everything unreleased and upcoming, but you may miss on many other video games. I also recommend Gamasutra, I believe it provides a fairly objective viewpoint on the industry.

I love being angry so I make it a point to read the comments on sites whose opinions I don't like to begin with, like IGN, or Slate... comments from the yesmen and drones there remind me why I need to wake up every morning and be an armchair psychiatrists and social reformers.
