Wait, how is Playstation supposed to be a threat to Windows XP and Vista? Let's see...
It's got a Unix-like operating system straight out of the box, just like the Mac It's got a hard drive that can store music, videos and other important stuff, just like the Mac It's designed to look "stylish", just like the Mac It's got few games, most of them aren't any good, and those that are already have (superior) versions on the PC, just like the Mac Recently, it's shown the ability to have easy-to-install operating systems on dual-, or possibly multi-boot setups, just like the Mac. Most gaming software for it are made with free tools, just like the Mac. Its processor was originally a PowerPC, but they changed from that into a pioneering new multi-core processor, just like the Mac.
Personally, I don't see how they see it as a threat.

With all that has been said so far it's hard to stay on topic.
I think it was a good thing that Sony entered the market when it happened, but I don't think it's so great anymore. At the time the Playstation was released I didn't like what both Nintendo and Sega were doing. Sega had just released the Saturn with a 400 hundred dollar price tag, and Nintendo had released the N64 with games with a 70 dollar price tag. I didn't like any of this so when I saw the PS it was like a sigh of relief. It was an affordable option. Square announcing that they were releasing the new Final Fantasy on the Sony system was like icing on the cake, I was getting one.
Fast forward to now, and I don't like Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony. Gamers like to talk about Nintendo as if it were a humanitarian company. They aren't. I still remember when they made licensing policies that stated if you develop for Nintendo, you develop only for Nintendo. Mark my words, they aren't doing it now because the compitition is greater, if they still dominated like they did back then they would still be doing it. Microsoft is still an evil corporation. Just because they have a "console" now and good exclusive games are released for it does not make them saints. Sony of America doesn't want 2D fighters on their systems, my favorite genre. If Capcom and Konami didn't make excluvise games for them I would not have bought their system.
Maybe these are all old reasons that don't hold true anymore. Maybe I just hold grudges. But I still don't like them. I want the market to crash so that it can be reborn again, maybe then every game can be played on a universal player and all these console wars can be a thing of the past.

The thing with wars and everything is that everyone was supposed to gain from competition; the companies would be forced to make quality titles with low prices, but given that mainstream gaming, which was partly started by Sega's Genesis, made crappy titles so popular, this is very hard to believe.

Alright, let me see how this statement I used from somewhere else holds up... It's got a Unix-like operating system straight out of the box, just like the Mac The PS3 is cheaper than a Mac, which means a higher chance of penetration in households. And since Sony and Microsoft are competing against each other, the chances of seeing an official announcement from Microsoft saying that there will be a version of Windows available to run on the PS3 is nil, as this is Sony's pride and joy. This fact alone is more than enough to pose a threat to Microsoft, since even Macs run Windows. It's got a hard drive that can store music, videos and other important stuff, just like the Mac. Or a PC. Take your pick. Either way, the PS3 is smaller than both, and can perform the same tasks, given the right software. It's designed to look "stylish", just like the Mac Short of the PC enthusiasts, this feature by default already has greater appeal because it's obviously smaller to both a typical PC case and an iMac, and can also fit in your living room while simultaneously functioning as a PC. Once the PS3 becomes cheaper over time, which would you rather have: a PC that'll either be pre-packaged with inferior hardware that can't play all of these brandspanking new games, (forcing you to spend around the price of a PS2 per upgrade) or a PS3 with set hardware standards that are pushed to the limit with efficient code which somehow make its games look comparable to the current crop of PC games? Did I forget to mention that this can also function as a PC and it's a Sony product that will not have a Microsoft operating system installed in it? Recently, it's shown the ability to have easy-to-install operating systems on dual-, or possibly multi-boot setups, just like the Mac. Or a PC, and this is pretty irrelevant to my point because there's no practical use to try and figure out how to get OSX and Windows to work on a PS3 anyway. Most gaming software for it are made with free tools, just like the Mac. The PC can do that too, you know. Microsoft knows this, and have done a similar solution as well. Its processor was originally a PowerPC, but they changed from that into a pioneering new multi-core processor, just like the Mac. I'm... trying my hardest on trying to figure out the point you're trying to make on this one, and it's not working. If the rest of the hardware legally allows Microsoft's operating system to be installed on it, they'll program their operating system to be installed on it, hence why you see the odd combination of Microsoft's operating system on Sony PCs. Anyway, in conclusion, I want the market to crash so that it can be reborn again, maybe then every game can be played on a universal player and all these console wars can be a thing of the past. Get a beefed up PC instead of waiting for the market to crash, since lots of small developers go down in the process, and I'd be deeply saddened to see Treasure and G.Rev go down with it. That's your universal gaming machine. Heck, even Sega's next-gen arcade hardware consists of top-tier PC parts from last year.

It may not be a great gaming machine (as for emulation though...) but the Mac Mini is much much smaller than the PS3 and is the same cost as the high end PS3. It ships with a collection of really awesome software. Microsoft is probably as happy as can be that the Mac runs Windows... they are an OS company after all.

[The PowerPC structure was pretty much the only thing that prevented Microsoft to develop their OS for Macs, and the new Cell structure isn't gonna be nice either] Personally, I don't see how they see it as a threat.

Aww bless, $70 for a new game- you are so hard done by! Try living in Europe- $80 is the very cheapest you will get a new 360 game for. Sometimes you guys just don't know how good you have it!

Sony lost big money with me. My PS2 I rescued from a garbage can, 1/3 of my games I stole from Blockbuster (not very proud of that) and the games I buy nowadays I get used and wait till they reach the $20 mark. So Sony doesn't owe me anything.
