women are culturally taught that they're more desirable if they remain pure and chaste, so they fight their urges a lot more than men do (at least publicly!). I believe the urges themselves are the same, however, and that there is no reason women can't lust after male characters in fiction (and I believe they do) just as much as men lust after female characters in fiction. Holy shit, you've just become the fusion of a neckbeard sexist and a third wave Tumblr feminist. Did your hair turn blonde and suddenly get all huge and spikey? I'd appreciate not being labeled, especially when it's clearly being done to try to discredit me through subtle insults under the guise of humor. I subscribe to the philosophical and societal beliefs that correspond with the world I see around me, because I trust my own eyes, ears and logical deductive reasoning more than anything or anyone else. EDIT: Actually, I might be focusing on the wrong thing here. How is anything I said sexist, much less "neckbeard sexist"? And what does "third wave Tumblr feminist" even mean? If you're going to insult me, at least use real insults, not meaningless buzz-words. -Tom

women are culturally taught that they're more desirable if they remain pure and chaste, so they fight their urges a lot more than men do (at least publicly!). I'll help rephrase this because disparaging 'ugh neckbeards' and 'ugh feminists' comments don't tend to help anyone. Most women tend to find other women gross if they're openly disclosing their sex life, and feel like they might be sending the wrong signal if they disclose it around men, so they keep that kind of thing completely private around both women and men. It's not really something that makes them feel 'more desirable if they're pure and chaste,' but rather it's the other way around; it's something that makes women feel gross and uncomfortable if they hear other girls telling everyone about their sexual adventures, so they don't really want to give off those kinds of gross feelings themselves. There's always exceptions of course, and the following is down to personal anecdotes, but I feel pretty safe saying that every girl friend I've known in person has been like that. They're okay with saying how hot guys are, but as soon as someone asks if they've gone further than kissing, or if they've ever seen the guy naked, there's a sudden wave from both sides of "oh god this conversation is leading towards something that people will think is pretty gross, better shut up and change the subject" even though it's totally clear what they're both thinking.

Oh, hey, one of these topics.
Because people totally aren't individuals, they're a member of a monolithic group that all think exactly the same way.

If you don't generalize at least a little bit, there's not really anything to discuss. Every discussion will just end with "everybody's different, so who knows?" Social and physiological trends do exist, and I think the "this does not apply to every person" is pretty well implied in everything we've been discussing here. -Tom

Because people totally aren't individuals, they're a member of a monolithic group that all think exactly the same way. So social science is bullshit? wyrdwad: Sorry if that came across as derogatory. It was actually an attempt to somewhat lighten up the mood (DBZ reference!), but I guess that backfired.

All I want to know is why people in here, besides how the main character is designed or how immature the humor may be (the villain is called Balzac, hehehe geddit), think Ultonius is a bad game or why it at least looks bad. It has very nice, colorful graphics and environmental/level design, and seems to have some fun-looking set pieces and cool-looking enemies and it certainly doesn't look any more "plodding" than a Castlevania game. So...?

I'd like to respond, but I think it's just something I can't quite get to when I'd have to type it out, rather than say it face to face, heh.

It has very nice, colorful graphics and environmental/level design, and seems to have some fun-looking set pieces and cool-looking enemies and it certainly doesn't look any more "plodding" than a Castlevania game. So...? Even in the trailer, the character spends a great deal just walking straight ahead. The level design looks flat, and in the gameplay video I've watched, it also seems like it's bullshit hard (bosses have patterns that you have to memorize, but have little to no chance to survive them the first time around). Also, it seems to be pretty slow, and seems to hardly integrate environment into the action. For example, in Mega Man, you have to take platforms into account when jumping over enemies, and with Mario, you can lure enemies into a pit instead of dealing with them. Here... like I said above, mostly plain areas. And ESPECIALLY with the old Castlevania's you have to think of your surroundings before making a jump! And while they are plodding, they are not by being repetitive. If stuff takes longer in those games, it's because it's a tough foe. Really, as far as gameplay is concerned, it looks to be very much in vein of 90s DOS shareware, just with really good graphics. I might be wrong, but hey, you asked! The big border is also puzzling.

I don't care about ferrets. Please take that "This thread is stupid, let's talk about (wacky irrelevant topic)" shit back to GameFAQs where it belongs. It might have been funny when I was 13. Can you take that attitude elsewhere?

I did a quick Ctrl+F on this thread for 'Game Over' and didn't find anything, so in case it hasn't been brought up yet, Ultonius started off as a remake of Game Over II. That explains the border/interface and character design. A screenshot!

So this thread is going to get locked. Great work, everyone. God damn it. Yeah, I think this discussion needs to be closed while we moderators consider the dispensing of warnings and/or appropriate discipline for those involved.
