About a week or so ago, I decided to try out Dolphin on a whim. I've had a homebrewed Wii for years, so it wasn't too much hassle to get Dolphin up and running, and I have ripped several Gamecube games and one Wii game to my computer thus far. Being able to play games like Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door in HD is so amazing and wonderful, though most games I've tried so far which are more demanding, tend to have slowdown (such as Super Smash Bros. Melee  ). Anyways, I only have a few WiiWare games, but considering what they are (my two favorites being Contra ReBirth and Mega Man 9), I do not expect my PC to have problems running them. However, I don't know how to go about getting them into Dolphin. According to some stuff I looked up, apparently I need to get the Wii's system menu ripped, and then run that through Dolphin, and somehow install my WiiWare games into that? It... seems convoluted, and I'm afraid I'll mess it up. Has anyone here gotten WiiWare and/or Virtual Console games up and running in Dolphin? Any advice I should follow? I only plan on emulating games I myself already own, so I'd rather not go searching for them online someplace. |

Since wiiware games are digital, isn't easier to just download them? Do you mean, download them from the Wii Shop Channel, or from less legitimate sources? Also, most of those guides you linked seem to be related to modding on an actual Wii system, which isn't really what I'm looking to do right now. |

When it comes to downloading Shop Channel games, Dolphin has one advantage over the actual Wii: you don't need to mess with cIOS hacks or the WAD Installer homebrew to make them work. Dolphin can just open the WAD files directly. You'd still need to get them from somewhere, though...I wonder if downloading them legitimately and then copying them to an SD Card through the Wii Menu would work? |

I get the sense that you don't want to do (or feel like you're doing) something illegal, but regardless if you rip a game that you own or if you download it, you're still doing something illegal. Maybe psychologically you believe you are allowed/entitled to, but not legally.
I don't want to open a can of legality worms, but it doesn't matter if you own 20 versions of the same game, you are not legally allowed to copy/rip any game that you own. Those GC and Wii discs you ripped to play on your PC? Yep, illegal. It doesn't matter if you own the game. Of course, no one is going to come after you because of that, but it's still illegal.
So just download the game from any rom site or torrent and be done with it.

It's totally legal in Canada (at least basic copying): laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-42/page-29.html#h-37Though it's still illegal if you're bypassing DRM/"digital locks" to make the copy. Which would generally apply to almost any way you're attempting to get Wiiware games into an emulator  . |

I don't know where the OP is from. I see no issues with anyone making "backup" copies of something they own. What's bad (in my eyes), is making money off that.
But my suggestion still stands, just download the wiiware game from a rom site and be done with it.

How do SD cards work in regard to this? If you can transfer files to an SD card and then have it read on the PC, that'd be the way to go. Otherwise, I don't know if you could emulate without downloading roms.

I'm pretty sure the file on the SD is encrypted to hell and back, and keyed based on your console's unique encryption key.
You could PROBABLY get your console's key if you've homebrewed your console, but then you've already broken the console's DRM, so you're already in trouble with the law. Anything you do with the console after to extract your encryption key or copy an emulatable copy of the game is therefore suspect. As Rey said, if you're at this stage, downloading is no better or worse.
Rey: my main point was your original statement was A) overly broad, and B) false (at least where I live). Even in the US, it's my understanding that it's still in the void of not explicitly permitted or prohibited, with not-quite matching precedents on both sides of the argument. It would have to be explicitly tried in court to make a decision. Since no company is ever going to sue an individual who makes copies of their own purchased games for no profit or distribution, it's not likely to get answered any time soon.

Zerker: this has been discussed to hell and back. It's illegal to make backup copies of your games, period. But like you said, no one is going to sue a single person for "backing up" his games. However, there is an answer to that straight from Nintendo's mouth: www.nintendo.com/corp/legal.jspBasically, owning a ripped copy of your game, regardless if you get it off the internet or if you use a device to copy/rip your own game, it's illegal. In the USA and in Nintendo's eyes, at least. |

Rey: Nintendo isn't an unbiased source and it really isn't that simple. They can list their interpretation of the law, but they certainly can't dictate it. They are very clearly emphasizing the DEVICE, not the act of backing up games (of which doesn't require a specialized device for discs). They're also very clear to draw the link to copying and infringing distribution, and not to non-infringing backups. And yes, that's enough in this thread.
