Haven't played TIE Fighter yet, but X-Wing hasn't done that yet. But I don't know if X-Wing did it originally... tomorrow I'll try TIE Fighter and let you know.

Why can't I go to the 2nd mission in X-Wing? I've done this first mission like twice now.

You sure you finished all the mission objectives? Or maybe you have invisibility on?

Yep, I get back to the hangar and it says mission success and....if it's because I have unlimited weaponry... I'll be right back.
Oh and TIE Fighter doesn't have the color issue for me with this.

Is the DOS version the CD rerelease or the original floppy versions? I really hated the Windows remakes for a variety of reasons, and my CDs are too scratched up to be readable.

The Windows version and the Floppy versions. And SOB it was because I was using unlimited weapons. Should've known better.

Yes, if you have any of the "training" options enabled from the pause menu, it will not allow you to progress in campaigns. If you're having trouble with your weapons running low on ammo, learn how to adjust your ship's generators; you can allocate more energy to your weapons to charge them faster at the expense of either shield strength or engine power. I generally kick engine power down low and boost both shield and weapon by one notch each, turning my ship into more of a tank.

Yeah, I'm a poor shot, it was so I didn't have to redo a mission later on because I have juuuust enough missiles. I've been getting the hang of everything though.

If you don’t up the setting of your lasers, they will never charge. Same goes for shields. Shields recharge super slow, however, so it’s much better to recharge them from the lasers directly (shift+f9 maybe? I forget...) You can do the reverse if you need a quick boost of laser strength. Also, don’t be afraid to decharge either if you need to get somewhere fast. In general while fighting, I usually put the laser to improved from engine, and leave the shields as is – you’re too slow for most opponents otherwise.
Also, be sure to cycle your shields around when you take hits (S) to balance them out. It usually isn’t sensible to put them all in either hemisphere, because you’re really not guaranteed to only take hits there, in any case.

I recall the escort missions in X-Wing being insanely frustrating.
Never did get a chance to play Tie Fighter (I'd actually consider picking these up, but....the WoW xpac is like 2 weeks away, and I simply wouldn't play any game I buy now, lol. Well...maybe I'll make an exception for the Apogee pack, but that's for another thread.)

I actually remember playing TIE Fighter once or twice... my dad had it years ago. Not sure what became of it nowadays but I still have the pilot's manual for it, as well as a cross between a novel and an instruction manual, detailing the struggles of a guy named Maarek.

I still have my X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and X-Wing Alliance CDs.
I don't think I completed X-Wing "properly". I used the Top Ace pre-made character to access all the missions instead.
TIE Fighter is more forgiving in that it allows missions to be completed while cheating (can be necessary in an unshielded TIE). It does hurt your score, however.
I have played one 90s flight seem with a gamepad instead of a flight stick. It worked okay, but the game was more arcade-y with auto-aiming weapons. It probably won't work when trying to hit TIEs.

I seem to recall reading on several occasions that TIE Fighter controls very nicely – ideally, even – with a mouse. If I had to guess, it's probably a side-effect of the way Windows 7 onward handle games that require 256-color displays. Because it doesn't actually stop the window manager from fucking around with the palette, the game will look correct for a few frames, then suddenly enter Frooty Colors mode. It made GOG's version of Interstate '76 quite difficult. One known solution is to manually force-kill Explorer.exe before running the game. This has side-effects, though, such as disconnecting any wireless networks and making it difficult to Alt-Tab if needed. I understand DxWnd is a preferable method now.

The campaign missions where you flie unshielded TIEs are among the easiest ones, in any case. In fact, I find it boring how you only fly the defender and missile boat in the later missions. I do have to admit, though, that I used to cheat in X-Wing by copying my pilot file after each mission, what with permadeath and all. Sure, you can resurrect your guy, but lose all the medals and promotions... But seriously, who’s going to complete X-Wing without dying or getting captured even once?

GOG is running sales on the Wing Commander series, and of course, X-Wing and Tie Fighter were just released. I don't want to break the bank, but I really wanted to play these - does anyone have any recommendations on a relatively inexpensive but serviceable flight stick? Or are those two things mutually exclusive?
