Anybodybody have any favorite rpg battle systems? Or is anybody aware of any that are different than most others? I am familiar with several myself, but I am asking to find out about any that i might have missed out on.

In general, I like systems where you aren't just selecting from menus like a lot of traditional games (though I like and have played many of those as well), though of the traditional system, I think Shin Megami Tensei does it pretty well with its press turn system.
While the game's pricey and a bit easy, Panzer Dragoon Saga has a fun battle system where you can constantly switch your dragon's forms and move around the battlefield to try to find weak spots. Once you get a specific spell, though, the game becomes even more of a cakewalk.
I really like Xenogears' system as well, with its two layers of combat. Hand to hand is done via combos you earn throughout play which must be inputted like a basic fighting game. Gear combat is done more in a traditional way, but you must watch out for the fuel meter. My memory of this particular system is kinda hazy, as I haven't played it in years, but I remember enjoying it enough to plunk 80+ hours into it.

The LiMBS, hands-down my favourite system. Making random battles into beat'em up segments was the coolest idea ever.

Valkyrie Profile 1 & 2 have the most unique, original, interesting and deep battle systems. You won't believe how much it's different until you play it. There also tons of differences between VP1 battle system and VP2 battle system.
Suikoden 3 also has great battle system with its pair system and the affection of time and space.
Grandia 2 has an awesome and unique battle system, it's sad that this game is so fucking easy you don't have to use half of the tactics you can think of.
If you consider ARPG too, you got Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales of seires and Star Ocean series which all got great battle systems (except Star Ocean 1).

How well Andromeda managed to capture the spirit of the series' shooters in that system always makes me smile.

SD Snatcher's battle system is still one of my favorites. No random encounters, and battles itself were more advanced than in most RPGs at the time.

Great Greeds battle system is one of a kind, and its a gameboy game. I just recently got Baten Kaitos and was always avoiding it because I thought the card battle system would be lame and lke Yu-gi-oh. But once I got it I found it was surprisingly fun. Legend of Dragoons battle system is fun because you can do combos and such. I like the Paper Mario TTYD battle system. You have to make the croud happy to do specal moves, and sometimes people in the croud will try to attack you and you can run down from the stage and kill them its pretty awesome. The game is also really funny expecaly when people make fun of marios mustache.

I always liked Parasite Eve's battle system, since it allows you to dodge most attacks by moving out of the way (though the one downside is that Aya runs far too slow to be of much use). I'll second Valkyrie Profile (I haven't played the second one though), and then there's the system in Core Design's Heimdall (for Amiga and Sega CD).

The LiMBS, hands-down my favourite system. Making random battles into beat'em up segments was the coolest idea ever. Hah! See how I used the name Namco has been giving Tri-Ace's system from the beginning? The Linear Motion Battle System and its many variants are awesome, and if you like the crappy story vs. good system ratio, I suggest you take a look at Summon Night: Sword Story. The game looks bad, really bad, the artwork is mediocre at best, the tunes sound like straight out of a NES game (not in a good way) and the story would be more at home in a shonen manga. But it still has a place in my heart for being the first game that tried to imitate the LiMB System. They really didn't do anything to expand upon the formula, except for that second health bar for your weapon, but at least the fights are smooth and easy to learn if you've played any Tales of game.

Phantasy Star IV had an awesome attack combination system and Fallout 1 and 2 have one of the most deep and rewarding turn-based systems out there.

Ah yes, Fallout was something else, a cross between a regular RPG and an SRPG. I really liked how you could be both viciously violent in one playthrough, and a complete democrat the next.

Hitting dudes in the groin with a sledgehammer was one highlight of Fallout.

I always aim for the eyes, then the groin. Sometimes I even like to leave them like that. And I downloaded a fan-patch just so I could kill some children, does that make me a bad person?
