Just doing some research on gameplay and tying to learn how to properly draw/pixel them. I'm digging into this mechmod game for Hl1 (which sadly no one plays)

Take a look at Enix's PS2 game, Robot Alchemic Drive. The game is the most unusual mech combat game I've ever played. You actually look up from the ground and control your mech that is 1000's of times taller than you and you even have to change your vantage point as your mech moves from out of your sight. The art style is somewhere in between anime and realistic for the mechs. Check it out.

The MechWarrior games are absolute classics, and then there's Slave Zero, Shogo, and Heavy Gear 2 (don't bother with the first one though).

The only robot games for DC I know other then Slave Zero, is Frame Gride, the Gundam Games, Virtual On (oh and maybe Charge and Blast).
You've also got Custom Robo on the GC, Armoured Core on everything, maybe Robo Pit 2, GunGriffon Blaze (Which has a Model View mode you'd find useful).

There's also Gundam: Federation vs Zeon for DC but it's Japan only. A PS2 version was released later and it made it to America. In that series there's also Gundam vs Zeta Gundam which is a great game.
Also on PS2 is the Zone of the Enders series. I recommend picking up ZOE 2nd Runner if you can find it. It's better than ZOE1 in everyway and it's just a lot of fun to play. The game is different from other giant robot games in that it's fast, very fast. In some of the more intense areas your eyes will water from you not blinking and trying to follow the action.
Speaking of fast giant robot games, there's also the Another Century's Episode series. Unfortunately this series is available only in Japan. The main draw of this series is that it brings many robots from different anime series. A game with this many lincenses might seem like it sucks but it's actually quite good. I have the second game in the series A.C.E. 2, and it was worth getting a Japanese PS2 for it.

Though not the game's focus, Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2 features mech battling.

Theres that side story game I was talking about. It's weird, I wiki'd it and got nothing - I googled and just got some old SS games It's like.....
a government coverup? Perhaps it was too good for humanity?
*x-files music*
Can I get some more info on "Slave Zero" and "Frame Grid"

If you own a Dreamcast, get Tech Romancer. NOW! Also Zoe and Zoe 2 on the PS2.
S.L.A.I is also kind of fun in that Mechwarrior dethmach kind a way. And the Front Mission series are great if you like your SRPG with plenty of customization.
