Strange, come to think of it, that there are so few racing games on the 3DS, since, you know, 3D goes well with the genre. I think we can all agree that Mario Kart 7 pulled it off perfectly. I'd put Ridge Racer 3D in the good games of the 3DS' Library, but the rest are more of an unknown entity. So:
First of all, how many racing games ARE there? I see Asphalt, NFS The Run, the new WRC game, e-shop release Airace Speed... I'm looking for a complete list, but I can't find it.
Second, which ones could be said to be good with a straight face? (As I often admitted, I have a passion for Ridge Racer, so I find it good, even if disppointing - 30 FPS, less pretty than the PSP games). In the "You cannot go wrong with these" category there are SEGA's Super Hang-On 3D and soon, OutRun 3D, and... huh?
Another decent one?

That's basically my list too. Mario Kart 7, Ridge Racer 3D and the Sega 3D Classics. No idea what happened to this genre, the companies that are putting out racing games are the ones who make sims and prefer to create showstoppers in graphics and scope. Handhelds are out of the equation.

But a 3DS F-Zero could be a beauty, if the franchise wasn't in abandon...

There's also that Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed thingie game. I have no idea if the 3DS version is any good though.
And then there's.....uhm..... Spyhunter? And once again, I have no idea how that game holds up.
Mario Kart 7 was really fun. And I would live to see F-Zero, but I feel it's more likely to get resurrected on the Wii U, possibly.
Other racers I'd like to see resurrected on the 3DS: Rock'n Roll Racing RC Pro Am Micro Machines Street Racer Rad Racer Mach Rider Road Rash Super Off-Road Top Gear
Although I dunno about Top Gear. Probably nostalgia talking. Besides, Kemco is busy pumping out 3-4 generic SNES style JRPGs for iOS/Android each month. (WTF happened to that company?)

Sega Racing Transformed is the only kart racer on the market that can compete with Mario Kart, and a sizable minority would even prefer it. So it's not a "thingie"! ... But both handheld versions are sadly very underwhelming. There is a 3DS demo available, so you can see just how really ugly the port is. Shame, the first game was one of the DS' unknown gems. But the console versions of Transformed are seriously top-notch. So no, I don't recommend Transformed. Too bland.

I honestly prefer the PC edition, I believe you can run it at a solid 60fps which is a must for racers I must say (or for most games anyhow). Plus, Ryu Hyabusa from Shenmue is DLC as well as some Sega PC games have characters (Total War Shogun, Football Manager) and even the TF2 team are in the game. The other edition is recommend is the Vita version, nothing else. I'd like to give the Wii U version a go, simply for 5 player races, but I hear the frame rate suffers because of it.

I believe 60 FPS can make a world of difference in such a fast game, so I'll second your opinion based on experience. SEGA games should always shoot for 60 FPS; more than any other brand, their identity is hyper-kinetic action. Or was. They make IPhone games now. - I do have the Vita version... and find it fantastically dull, framerate, graphics and gameplay. Only the pure joy of a Nights and a Shinobi themed courses save it. The Panzer Dragoon one is very bland. I would give it a 6/10, to give you an idea.

Sega Racing Transformed has such a weird feel to it...
As if somehow, despite playing an HD game, you're being subjected to it at 50Hz.

This is my biggest beef with the 3DS too. No racers. Ridge Racer 3D is fantastic. Not 60fps, but good enough you'll never notice a lower frame-rate. Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed is best on PC, but also great on 360 and Wii U - I know because I own the game on every single system I have that it's available on. It's that good. Never tried it on Vita. The 3DS version is still fun, but not a patch on it's bigger screen brothers. The DS version of the first Sonic Racing was one of my absolute favourite games on that system too! I tried the demo of that new WRC game, and despite absolutely wanting to like it because it's a) Rally, and b) of the few racing games, I absolutely cannot recommend it. Total shovelware. Bad controls, bad everything. We need more racing games on the 3DS. Actually, this is a problem with the 3DS in general - unless you're after a Platformer, RPG, SRPG, or ARPG, your choices are pretty limited. There's not a whole heap of Fighters either. It could really use a Soul Calibur. Though I have a serious beef with Namco's portable fighters as of late too. Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny on the PSP has no straight, pure Arcade mode, and neither does Tekken 3D. I'd rather an Arcade mode than the shitty 3D CG movie that I cannot even sit though. But enough de-railing. I love my 3DS, but the I find the library realllly lacking in genres I like.

Which version do you mean? PS3. Considering it is the same as 360's version, I think that feeling is due to the fact that the framerate is permanently unstable, but within acceptable margins - and it is not very high to begin with. It's a rare thing in games actually, and pretty noticeable with the Sonic All-Stars series on consoles. Just my two cents

Other racers I'd like to see resurrected on the 3DS: RC Pro Am Rad Racer Two of my first racing games. Unfortunately the developers probably prevent new games from happening. Pro AM is a Rareware title, if they bring it back it probbaly end up on Xbox One. Rad Racer is from Square, and I think they called the genre quits after Driving Emotion Type-S. Maybe they should get Taito to bring back Chase HQ for 3DS instead. Nintendo has a few IPs ripe for 3DS. Excite Bike similar to that N64 version. A new Wave Race.
