Actually I have to admit I just say Square. And I thought until recently that they bought Enix. But really it's not like we've seen many Lennus games these days.

Same. I tend to refer to them as Square more than Square-Enix, much like how I keep calling SNK Playmore plain ol' SNK.

Bandai has always been a purveyor of shitty anime merchandise in my eyes, so it's not much of a problem to ignore their continued existence as part of that merger. The loss of Koei's unique identity hurts a bit more, but what have they really done other than endless Dynasty Warriors games since 2000? God, I miss their historical simulation series. See, the Bandai Namco merger was interesting to me, as Bandai actually published quite a few of Namco's NES titles in NA in the 80s (Dragon Spirit, Dig Dug 2, Xevious, Galaga). It's a "full circle" moment, like Midway (and by extension, the arcade IPs of the Original Atari) ending up back in the arms of Warner. And I actually feel like Koei absorbed Tecmo's existence, not the other way around. I know people love Ninja Gaiden and Fatal Frame, but the Koei side has been way more active (ironically, developing out a lot of Bandai's "shitty anime merchandise"), and being the distribution arm of a few NIS titles, since the merger. I could never get into Koei's resource management sims, though (which brings games like Aerobiz, Gemfire, and Uncharted Waters into the fold, rather that just Rot3K and Nobunaga's Ambition). But I can't seem to get a grip on ANY game that involves resource management...

To be fair, SNKP is a different sort of situation, where SNK's original founder started Playmore with the express intention of buying back SNK's properties when he got the opening to. I always find it weird that people assume that Big Awesome Square must have steamrolled Enix, not knowing that Idiot Square put themselves under with The Spirits Within, and Enix had to come along and bail them out. ...and then they swallowed up Taito and proceeded to do fuck-all with it.

The genre really stymied me for a long time, as well. Turns out the trick is to find a way to make money before doing anything else. Then expand slowly.

I was talking more about the name itself, and not the company's situation/reasons, if that makes any sense. I was trying to relate. I do share your feelings on Taito's fate, though... It was disappointing what happened, IMHO. Course, I mainly say this on the account I'm kind of a fan of the company. At this point I'm surprised they're still around. Sort of.

*scroll, scroll* please don't let the protagonist have a dumb name, please don't let the protagonist have a dumb na-god FUCK Hah. Hadn't seen that yet. So named after a dictator and a famous author? Well it isn't as on the nose as the last two. I had to at least Google Camus. Edge Maverick still stands as the most ridiculous protagonist name ever.

Edge Maverick is stupid, but Fayt Leingod is a really and truly special kind of dumb. If they had spelled it Edje Mavyrik or something it would be the winner.
edit: Albert Camus wrote a lot of deep-but-depressing existential literature about the angst that arises when we're confronted with the facts of our inevitable death. I'm guessing they're going to try and work tangential elements of L'etranger into the story because why the fuck not, it worked for Revengeance!

Fidel is catalan for loyal/faithful, so it's probably related to the title I really want to make a myth of Sysiphus joke but it can't make it flow in english. (I'm re-reading L'étranger because my finals are in two weeks and damn it's still as depressing as ever)

I'm stoked to see a new Star Ocean is coming to the proper consoles (I actually enjoyed the last Hope, especially all the references and cameos from Star Ocean 1).
It's curious that they're setting it in between 2 and 3 given the last game took place before the 1st game. I guess they don't want to deal with the 4D reveal from SO3.
The main character's name doesn't bother me, but I'm hoping they still have an appearance by a member of the Kenni family, the lack of any real references to SO2 is one of (the other things) that most disappointed me about 3.

I figured someone more knowledgable of classic lit would be able to work out the entire plot of the game from just the protagonist name and the subtitle! Very subtle Squenix. Very subtle.

One has to wonder how angry the SO series' script-writers are that Xenosaga already stripped the Nietzsche mine raw...
"So, yeah, we couldn't do quite what we wanted, so the main character is named Iosif Freud. He has mommy issues and his sword has a variable length and girth depending on his emotional state. Central to the plot is the relationship between his secret power, and the monster terrorizing the universe. Both are named Holodomor."

Every time Squenix announces a new JRPG I wonder why it's not Chrono Trigger, like, ever.
They invest money in all kinds of old stuff, but Chrono Trigger - arguably one of the (if not THE) most loved JRPGs in history - seems to be out of the question. Like it doesn't exist.
Why?
WHY?
I wanna know the reason why they never even tried. I mean, sure there was Chrono Cross a million years ago, and the DS port.. But when Star Ocean is getting its 5th installment, something is weird.
Maybe Squenix is afraid of Chrono Trigger? Maybe they feel they can never do it justice again? It's the only explanation I have.
They probably shy away from a FF7 remake for similar reasons, but I bet we'll see that one before a new Chrono anyway.
A big-budget Chrono Trigger for PS4, with some serious marketing, would probably blow both FF15 and KH3 out of the water. The hype would be ridiculous.
But yeah. So, Star Ocean huh? Exciting times.. Maybe they can give us Infinite Undiscovery 2 while they're at it. Heck turn everything into a long-running franchise, except your best game evar whydoncha. /rant
