I wanna know the reason why they never even tried. I mean, sure there was Chrono Cross a million years ago, and the DS port.. But when Star Ocean is getting its 5th installment, something is weird.Star Ocean is a pretty respectable franchise, moreover Tri-Ace has nothing to do with Chrono Trigger and they more or less "own" star ocean (as they own the creative team, and there is no star ocean without Tri-Ace) Besides, what's the point? Instead of celebrating "Hurray, new star ocean!" you're complaining! Someone at square already said that making a new CT is something they're considering but reuniting the Dream Team for a second time would be an almost impossible task.

The point? I find it strange, that's all. The "respectability" of Star Ocean in 2015 is debatable, but I'll leave it at that. Not saying it isn't a reasonably big deal but I still don't understand why I Can't. Have. Chrono. Trigger. *kicks and screams like a spoiled baby*
No, but seriously. Squenix have stronger and more exciting brands than SO, IMO. I'm just trying to understand what goes on in meetings in some companies. But yeah, Tri-Ace and stuff..
I didn't hear Squenix talking about the dream team thing though, so yeah, I can accept that I guess. Makes sense. But it should've been top priority at some point, but it clearly never was. I don't think they necessarily need to gather the exact same people either. There are new talents out there these days.

How much Star Ocean belongs to Squeenix anyways? Isn't this more a thing of tri Ace saying "we'd make another SO, if you'll publish it again" and SE being "sure"? I know SE at last has (partly?) the rights to the name, like Sony has for Demon's Souls for example, but how much is it really their decission to say "SO next, not CT"?

With tri-Ace now belonging to a mobile content provider, how much of a staff do they even have remaining to work on a full-sized console release?

The SO5 reveal being so close to that news, I can only imagine that was already a done deal before they got bought. Also, wasn't Atlus owned by a mobile content provider before Sega bought them? I don't think it impeded them much, besides there being a lot more smartphone spinoffs/ports, and that's just modern gaming culture in Japan, really.

Will a lynch mob come after me if I were to say that I feel it's better off Square doesn't make a sequel to Chrono Trigger?
I just feel with the state of things being as they are now, a new CT game, even if it did happen, would not be very good. Or it could just be me being a dumb old fogey who has little faith in Square these days.

What was the last game Square-Enix developed internally that wasn't rubbish? FFXIV? And even that was shit until one competent guy took control after the game failed spectacularly, then rebuilt the whole damn game to not suck.
Square has run Final Fantasy almost completely into the ground. They destroyed Parasite Eve. They ruined Brave Fencer Musashi way back on the PS2. Bravely Default was merely average and that was one of the best games they've released in a while.
Modern Square-Enix is generally awful and the only thing that keeps them even remotely relevant is owning Eidos and occasionally acting as the publisher for a decent game made by someone else.

Dragon Quest X, surprisingly enough, is also made inhouse by SE and supposed to be really good. Not that it helps any of us western fans.
There's also Type-0... maybe. That thing was so hyped as finally a _good_ Final Fantasy when it was a japanese PSP-exclusive, but now that the HD-version is here, there seem to be a lot of "mehs" going around too.

Meanwhile, Capcom still hasn't released a new Breath of Fire in ages!
A new Star Ocean is nice and all, and while I still enjoy the FF series overall, and even chrono cross, I'd like Other RPGs to return that we haven't seen.

Actually (he said in a nasally voice) the closed beta of Breath of Fire 6 is supposed to start this summer, it releasing on Android in fall, with PC and iOS following this winter. At least that was the latest release estimate by Capcom. You know, that f2p MMO looking like the first Ragnarök Online, which is so totes Breath of Fire, Capcom didn't even think about using a blue haired hero as the default user created character stand in for the promos.

With how bad the only sequel ct got already was id prefer they left it alone Unpopular opinion time: I really don't think Chrono Trigger is really that good in retrospect. I mean, okay, the battle system is at least a few steps up from FF6's version of Active Time Battle, and I'm not sure any other RPGs of the time really messed with time travel that much as a high concept, but I feel like the characters aren't that interesting outside of their one defining trait (Silent hero! Inventor! Tomboy princess! Robot! Frog!), and the story feels like it loses its sense of direction after the "Day of Lavos" reveal. It just isn't as engaging to me, compared to others near its release, like Phantasy Star IV or Earthbound. Feel free to kick my ass over this, though.

There will never be another Chrono Trigger game. That ship has sailed a long time ago. All of the major creative people have already left the company. Even the Chrono Cross people have left!

I...kinda don't get why Chrono Trigger would be something you'd even think of when it comes to Star Ocean, especially in a thread talking about the Star Ocean franchise getting a new game. it just seems a random complaint, like watching a Spider-Man movie and screaming out "Where's bloody DareDevil!?"
I mean, they're both RPGs, but...that's about it. It just seems a bit silly to bring up a dead franchise every time the company thats owns an IP you like releases a game.

Why is strange to question direction of resources?
