More reason for that.
Nobody is willing to invest large ammounts of money in something if it going to return less money than putting it all in the bank.

Valve is privately owned you can't invest money into them. Valve doesn't need to make more money, which is I think one of the many reasons people are taking offense at this move. It really isn't value adding to consumers (since mods are historically free) and it's really scummy in relation to paying the content creators. Essentially my question would be, who does paying money for mods benefit. Ideally it should benefit the people making mods...apparently they only make 25% which is kind of absurd. That number is allegedly set by the game owners, so it might be bethesda being kinda dickish here, they've managed to fly pretty off the radar on this blow back though.

I know it won't happen but if people really want to make their stance on this clear, UNINSTALL STEAM!! Don't use it, use another platform or storefront. When valve sees their user base nose dive, I think they'd change their tune pretty quick. Just don't buy Steam mods. You don't have to get rid of the service because of one boneheaded decision that doesn't affect the entirety of the service.

That's a much more sensible response, yeah.

That's a much more sensible response, yeah. We vote with our dollar and all, but the message is only clear if enough people react to a particular service, not enough people will ever leave Steam to send a message, and if they do, it would just be that Steam needs to find a new market base.

Yeah, it just really bugs me when people say something like, "I'll never buy X again!" Bitch, please. We're all nerds here. No need to try to pretend you won't be right back in line with the rest of us. Maybe not tomorrow, but eventually.
Even if you do have enough to survive a willpower saving throw the next time something comes around, most people won't.

Unfortunately there's no way to say "Baron Harkonnen, stop being a condescending asshole whenever you open your mouth" with your wallet.

I must not Steam. Steam is the mod-killer.

I must not Steam. Steam is the mod-killer. I can't find a video clip of it but that one scene in the movie where he spits on Jessica's head is how I imagine him interacting with the userbase. "I want to spit on your head. Just some spittle, on your face. ptu."

Well, they've already earned more than 10k over the weekend according to Gabe. Its hard to vote with your wallet when there's people already throwing money away. Funnily enough the most subscribed mods didn't came from longtime Skyrim modders, but from DOTA modders. Witcher 3 is coming out with a modding tools, right? I never really liked these kind of tactics, but they'd get lot of good PR right now if they'd announce that Witcher 3 mods will be free forever.

It'll be back, that pretty much says as much. They'll start launching games with paid mod support. I also like how they talk about a *share* of the profit when this content/mod stuff was features that were pure value adding and the makers are only getting a pittance of 25%. Hopefully they take the feedback on board because I don't think paid mods are inherently flawed.

Hopefully they take the feedback on board because I don't think paid mods are inherently flawed. Paid mods could work, but there need to be some big changes to how they are implemented: 1. Dropping paid mods into the community for a game that has been a purely hobbyist community for several years was stupid. When several established major mods went behind a paywall, the product that users had already been enjoying for years lost value overnight. That's a lot more frustrating than knowing that a mod will cost money from day one. 2. Any future implementation of paid mods needs to place less of the burden of risk on the consumer. If Valve and the owners of a game are going to share in the profits of a mod, they should share in the work of making sure mods meet certain standards. 3. There need to be clear guidelines, FROM DAY ONE, about what can and cannot be monetized, and how mod dependencies can or cannot be monetized. Can you monetize bugfix mods, like the unofficial patches (and I hope the answer in "no" because that would be evil as shit)? What happens if your mod requires an existing mod? If you make a mod that adds a new NPC to the game but the NPC requires the installation of an existing paid mod, does the mod maker need to license the original mod? Because that kind of scenario quickly discourages collaborative efforts and creativity, and encourages mods to be entirely separate islands with little to no interactivity with each other. And that sucks.

Yeah there's a lot of situational stuff that Valve was like "well the community will regulate it" while they and Bethesda just sit back and count money as it rolls in.

And today I find out that the Garry's Mod and Space Engineers developers were in favor of supporting paid mods for the brief time that paid mods were active on Steam.
I'm really not sure how to feel anymore.
