As someone who is a big fan of heavy handed class warfare fiction, cyberpunk, and fantasy monsters in sci-fi settings the point where you run into cyberpunk Medusa and enter Tokyo basically put it in my top RPGs of all time. The game's atmosphere and soundtrack are phenomenal, it just feels weak because due to the ever present but underwritten cast you don't really get the sense that anything is changing in the world until towards the end.

You have to wonder if SMT could honestly be as good if it tried to change, though. Sort of like emphasizing combat in Silent Hill. The established formula might not be perfect in every way, but it does well for what it is.

I don't think the combat or the core gameplay needs to change, I would just like to see it in a different setting. Even a different setting within Japan, like something set in the feudal period.

Agreed, the world needs another fantasy JRPG.

I'd love to get a Raidou Kuzunoha 3(DS). Especially if it is closer to the first game. It's a really cool setting an all. I don't mind the main series staying in modern day/shortly after apocalyptic happening Tokyo, but I wouldn't mind getting more spinoffs that aren't the same setting.

Yeah, how did Russia's greatest love machine never get his own spinoff? It is an outrage.

How hardcore is Nocturne if you're still pretty green when it comes to JRPGs? Is it hopeless for a newb?

How hardcore is Nocturne if you're still pretty green when it comes to JRPGs? Is it hopeless for a newb? It definitely isn't for beginners. Even if you're fairly accustomed to JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, you're going to have to adapt to a pretty different style of play. I'd say begin with Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 first, to get a feel for how this series works.

I imagine they'd be like me and tolerate it until Matador and then say fuck this bullshit. Persona 4 is the way to go for newbies.
