^ That's why I said the JRPG zeitgeist was present... But, Pokemon completely outsold anything else and brought millions of new players into the fold beyond the few million already getting caught up in it. Pokemon did sell extremely well, but as others said, it had the benefit of merchandising, cartoons, trading cards, and multiple versions of the same game to help bolster those sales. However, other RPGs of 1998 managed to sell millions without all that, including Baldur's Gate, Xenogears, and Ocarina of Time (if you count Zelda as an action-RPG). While it's true that Pokemon might have been influential in getting younger gamers like yourself into the RPG genre, older gamers like myself were already deeply vested in the genre and were buying its games by truckloads. I'm just not too sure if Pokemon was as instrumental at mainstreaming the RPG genre as much as say Final Fantasy VII was. I mean I hope it was, don't get me wrong. But in my experience hardcore Pokemon players seem to stay content as hardcore Pokemon players, without evolving beyond that. Hence they keep buying practically the same exact game over and over.

Wish they'd bring back the ball crafting from G/S.

I'm gonna second Dark Souls. I tried to get into this game. I really...*really* tried...but damn. The only reason I don't think this game is garbage, is because I've played games that are in fact real actual garbage that never should've been. Regardless how fun it may get, how is one expected to give enough of shit to get that far? Gameplay is repetitive and often boring. Bosses (the game in general really) are totally unfair to the point where you're practically guaranteed death, which is great if you have a ton of exp and walk into a boss room with no way out. I imagine this game has as much of a story as Bloodborne, which is to say there really isn't one. I figured this game just got popular because of how difficult it was, people could beat it (if you know what I mean) and inflate their egos. However it would appear some people actually like this sadistic shit. Whatever floats your boat I guess, I won't judge. Even when comparing Skyward Sword to Twilight Princess? Because TP seemed to be almost engineered to be the most boring unoriginal thing imaginable. Haven't played SS because TP was the last straw for me. Those motion controls tacked on to a decade old game engine was just too much. Might I suggest a gamecube version? (It game out years before the Wii version right?) I thought TP was alright personally. The motion control was actually one of my favorite things about it. I'll never understand why people shit on it while OOT will forever be praised as the best game of all time. On that note, TP is the only Zelda game I've beaten, the reason being TP was the only Zelda game I found worth finishing. The stories are uninteresting, the gameplay isn't bad, but nothing worth mentioning, the "puzzles" are either children's activities that you find in a coloring book, or wandering around until you notice the thing you need. Combat is generally super easy... I would never say a Zelda game is bad, but I would never recommend playing one, nor will I understand why they're so damn popular. My brother is a big Zelda fan who would get honestly upset if he read this, but even he has a freakin' Youtube Walkthrough handy whenever he's in a dungeon.

Bullet Hell Shooters- way too chaotic. Wish they still made games like Aero Fighters. Seems like most shooters nowadays are either bullet-hell or grid-based with basic geometrical shapes. I have a love/hate thing with these. I love the idea and design, but I find it hard to believe that people are as good as they are with them.

Ryzuki I will admit that I have only played the Wii version. But interest is at a low at this point.

Understandable. As I said, I wouldn't recommend Zelda anyway. XD

To answer the original question, I don't get the popularity of most games, honestly. There are always shining examples of great media, but that's rare, and then the rest tend to follow in their footsteps, and copy whatever that was until the next big thing, and I just get so bored of the copycats that I just can't play anything like that shining example anymore.
I really just need something completely different. Those games do exist, and I do still find them, and they do still randomly come to fruition, but it can be difficult to find.

I can understand not liking JRPGs or Zelda, but surely you must see why they're popular? Maybe I'm just too anal about the thread title.

Alright, I'm laying down a ground rule here. No bringing up "Dudebro" games like Call of Dudebro or Madden. Everybody knows why you don't "get" those games. They're popular with all of the testosterone-overloaded dudebros that you hate. You didn't like those games to begin with, and you ESPECIALLY hate the people who play them. We all know it, so there's no need to bring those up. Instead, bring up games popular with "traditional" gamers where you just don't get it. ________________________ For me, it's Burgertime. I hear people bring it up a lot, but for the life of me, I just can't figure out what anybody sees in it. Not a dudebro and I enjoy Madden games of the 16-bit variety. I enjoy sports games of all ilk and certainly don't hate people who play them. Probably because I'm a sports fan. Don't do modern games at all so could really care less about those. Is it really that rare for a gameplayer to like sports games as well as other genres? I'll backup whoever said Pokemon and JRPGs as a whole. Boring. I need gameplay to stimulate my senses. I'll add Animal Crossing to the mix. And SIM-y type games as a whole. I spend enough time managing my own life, damn sure don't want to do it in a vidyagame...

Minecraft, I could see why it would have a cult following but for such an oddball title to be a legit phenomenon is surprising to me, I never would have seen that coming nor would I ever have even imagined a game like Minecraft existing. (and I guess that's why I don't have Notch's money)

Two more came to mind. One is Kingdom Hearts. I played the first two games and didn't like either one. II plays a bit smoother, but is even worse than the first in any other regard.
Also, Tomodachi Life. Granted I only played the demo, but was bored like 15 minutes in, and I'm someone who clocks in hours when he first starts an Animal Crossing or Sims. I think it's because I'm not entertained by "lulz so randomz" humor.
---
Regarding Twilight Princess, I only played the Wii version too (because I plunged on the Essentials budget release, after technically giving up on ever clicking with the series). Surely the GC version does not have the pitiful motion controls that do absolutely nothing but replace a button press with a less accurate and slower input - and I'm not saying this as a general hater of motion controls, TP seriously has them integrated as a clear afterthought. I don't have a GC, so I couldn't get the superior (and overpriced) version anyways, but I doubt the world and storyline are any less boring and generic to look at and play in. I don't even have high expectations from Zelda games in that regard, because they never are about the story or characters, but damn was I bored, and damn does TP think it is actually an epic tale. Honestly, the only Zelda I'd ever consider giving a go going forward is Wind Waker, because of the charming look and Link actually having a slight personality in his cartoon version, but that one's not on a console I own.

they never are about the story or characters I'm not sure I'd agree with that, especially with Majora's Mask.

Also, is it just me or do these types of threads have a tendency to become a bit condescending? I don't think this one has gotten there yet, though.

they never are about the story or characters I'm not sure I'd agree with that, especially with Majora's Mask. It's never the main focus of Zelda. Even with MM it's mostly sub-"stories" and most sub-quests can't even really be described as being of having a story.
