I personally do not really like Super Princess Peach, which pains me to say as a huge Princess Peach fan. I think it's a pretty boring game, honestly. The difficulty is too low for me, the pacing seemed very slow, and it felt like a chore to play towards the end. I pretty much played the last world or two just so I could say I beat it. That's not even getting into how questionable it is to portray a female character as fighting enemies by rapidly changing her own emotions multiple times. This is kind of cheating, but I'm gonna have a go at it anyway: The fact that whoever translated the German manual of Mega Man X obviously thought that long hair = women entailed that when I was a kid, Zero was always a girl to me. If you played the first level of the game, you know why this leads to pretty progressivist implications (too bad the "proper" women of the X-series were relegated to navigator-status (and whatever Iris is)). Holy shit, what if that game is actually the root of my appreciation for girls who are better at something than I am? lolol I too thought Zero was a girl for a long time, but I didn't have a poorly translated manual to blame for that. Zero does look pretty feminine in-game, but he does get referred to with male pronouns once or twice. My mind was silly enough as a kid that I rationalized to myself that those were just typos, and that Zero was actually really a girl. Eventually though... probably sometime after X4 came out, I admitted to myself that Zero is male. Just a very beautiful-looking guy with green crystal boobs on his chest No mentioned of Rhapsody yet? The entire game is centered around the heroine rescuing the captured prince. I really wanna play that game! Preferably on Playstation, since I've heard the DS version has a bunch of issues and design-changes. Not really Damsel in distress but Alys in Phantasy Star goes off to kick some ass and get revenge after her brother is murdered in front of her. I really need to finish this game. I remember being pretty impressed at how capable Alis is portrayed, considering the time period. The first act of Code: Veronica has you (as Vero, duh...)looking for Chris, to save him. ...you mean as Claire, right? lol That game kind of switches it up near the end though, where Chris ends up rescuing Claire toward the end.

Derp. I meant Claire, of course. Thanx. To my defense, I haven't played the game in 15 years... but great job. You are not called "expert" without reason!

Miracle Ropit's Adventure in 2100 is a Mega Man-esque platformer starring a small girl in a robot suit who eventually escapes on a UFO with a trapped boy. There's probably more information in the manual, but it's kind of vague (the robot suit seems to split into a boy and girl near the end, but getting hit in the suit before that turns you into a little girl...)
If you choose to play as a girl in Rune Factory 2's second generation, then the protagonist ends up saving her dad. Celes saving Cid through the FF6 fishing minigame might also count, even though the circumstances aren't very dramatic.

Hmmm. I haven't played it (yet), so I'm not sure if there's a dude-in-distress present or not, but I sort of recall there possibly being one in "Fray in Magical Adventure"? Dunno if anyone more familiar with the game than I am can confirm that, though.

The Japanese in general are just bad with race by tradition. It's a really conservative society, and they were closed off for a long time culturally, so they move slow on basic social issues, or slower than most. I'm pretty amazed when I see a black guy in an anime or manga and they actually look like people. Weird that Tetzuka drew black people better than a more modern artist, Urasawa. Love Monster and the guy's work, but his depiction of black people in Billy Bat is just ...how does a guy that worldly think that is okay? We see the problems because racial caricatures as a symbol of subjugation and discrimination is a uniquely western (and even more specifically American) thing and we expect other countries to KNOW this about our history when creating art for mass consumption. Tezuka relied heavily on racial caricatures for much of his career, btw. Here's the thing, though: It's 2015 and US culture is widespread. Hell, Mad Max Fury Road was ridiculous popular among hentai artists (dead serious). By this point, Japan at large has to know better ...and they do, actually. There's a lot more proper representations of other races in Japanese media now, though some sort of racist stereotype design keeps finding ways to pop up. Just because it's a different culture is not license to defend ignorance, especially because that culture is learning and evolving with the rest of the world. I will give Urasawa some slack, though. The main character of Billy Bat later became a black kid, and he looks normal. But him and his mother seem to be the only ones like that.

Just a very beautiful-looking guy with green crystal boobs on his chest I don't think Zero is ever "externally referred to" in X1. X and him chatter, but they just call each other their respective names, no gendered pronouns there. By X4, the booblights were gone (I believe?), and he had a super gruff voice. Also turns out he's built by Wily. I suppose that game was quite a shock to me as a kid.

Also, the Wily connection was hinted at least as early as X2, though not until the end of that game.

I just remembered about Balloon Kid where the main story is about a girl having to save her younger brother. This is kind of cheating, but I'm gonna have a go at it anyway: The fact that whoever translated the German manual of Mega Man X obviously thought that long hair = women entailed that when I was a kid, Zero was always a girl to me. Hahaha! Even when I was 3-5 years old and saw long-haired feminine males in anime, I could figure out they are male. Also that reminds me the german dub of Digimon Tamers where they gave male voice to Renamon while she has female voice at the original and every other dub I know (like in english and greek). Finally, I don't know about Dragonball Z dubs in other countries countries but in Greece they made Frieza a woman. And back then I was like "What the fuck! Look at his body! His chest! Does this looks like a woman?". alphex: They thought Zero was a woman because of the long hair and not because of the booblights? That's a first in my book. Actually even Capcom made a joke of this at Mega Man: The Power Battle where Bass joked about Zero's feminine look. Trouble Shooter sees Madison and Crystal saving a prince and delivering feminist bon mots like "The best man for the job is a woman!" They also stomp on the Super Famicom. Does that means feminists hate Super Famicom? Just kidding. No mentioned of Rhapsody yet? The entire game is centered around the heroine rescuing the captured prince. I was about to write it at my opening post but for some reason I forgot it. Also a reminder that I must play the Playstation version (the DS version sucks). Prinny has all the penguins following orders from a woman. For a stolen underwear. - Mischief Makers: One of my favorite games and probably the funniest Reverse "damsel in distress" video games where robot maid Marina has to save her creator (that happens to be a goofy, perverted old man a la Muten Roshi from Dragonball) all the fucking time. And unlike most woman-looking robots in japanese video games, anime and manga, Marina doesn't have a sexy or typical moe design. She's not moe, but I think she is still pretty cute. She is cute indeed but without trying hard to be "Am I kawaii ugu?" like in typical moe games. Not that I have problem with moe games (at least with the good ones). Adventures of Star Saver originally had a girl save a boy; this was rereversed for the export version. I didn't knew about this. Even for early '90s game, this change is stupid.

DECIDE ALREADY, NINTENDO!
