Though, every time someone talks about collecting Vader accoutrements, I can't help but thing of those abysmal children's novels from the 90s ( The Glove of Darth Vader, I'm looking at you!), and the ensuing Mega64 sketch: www.youtube.com/watch?v=etwJnVBHy9cThat one about the glove is exactly what I was referring to!

Ha! I remember checking those books out from my school library in like second or third grade, yeah they were bad but I still enjoyed them Oh, I absolutely did, too! I owned that series up until a move a couple years ago, when I basically axed my entire back collection of worn sci-fi and fantasy paperbacks, because I didn't read them any more (and when I tried to, I realized the writing was bad enough to make me uncomfortable). Since then, I've gotten to the point where I can enjoy shitty pulp schlock in all its salty goodness in small doses here and there, but I still haven't re-read most of the Star Wars stuff.

The collecting thing has been rewritten in a recent novel that's considered canon.

I'm glad because it is a cool idea.
Another EU idea I heard about once they should maybe borrow is Vader's secret castle hideout that was underwater and could only be accessed by lifting the entire thing up with force powers.

Given that they have established (with Star Wars Rebels) that many Jedi temples basically work that way, it's less far-fetched than it sounds!

To be honest there are even a few elements from the prequels I would like to see return since some of the ideas were cool, even if the execution left something to be desired.
For example Battle Droids, yeah they're kinda goofy ("Roger! Roger!") but they make good cannon fodder, you can slice em and dice em and it's not too violent for PG-13, considering there's no telling how many Stormtroopers the First Order has lost now, maybe they could compliment their forces with newer, more badass models of Battle Droids as backup for the troops (there IS a reference to Clone Troopers, so we'll see)
I would also like to see a return to Coruscant, which I think was the coolest thing from the prequels, what would Coruscant look like after some 50 years? It'd be interesting to see.

Yeah, I was surprised they didn't have Coruscant in the new film. In fact, I was extra surprised when they destroyed the capital of the Republic, and it was some other planet!

That part did confuse me, was that really the capital of the Republic or was the First Order simply demonstrating that they can fuck shit up by destroying 5 unrelated planets? It seems a little too soon to simply wipe out the Republic just like that, I mean damn. Also to be clear, I'm not saying I want Battle Droids to replace Stormtroopers, I actually really love the design of the new Stormtroopers, I'm just saying throw a few Droids in there as Lightsaber fodder for variety's sake.

I think the way the New Republic didn't get any screentime was meant to be tongue-in-cheek fanservice for people who disliked all of the senate scenes in the prequels. ...sort of like in Shrek how they draw attention to stopping songs before they can start.

Similarly, one scene that really caught my attention was during the escape from Han's cargo ship, where he just grabs a guy and throws him at the maws of a monster. Most likely fanservice to whole Han Shot First movement.

There's that weird part in the 2nd act when Han does a no-look RoboCop shot. Han shoots so quickly he doesn't even have to see who he's shooting!

Ford comes across as positively ancient in this movie, so it's a bit much to believe he's still that good of a shot.

I feel like there was supposed to be a beat there, but nobody could decide whether Han was supposed to be surprised that he actually shot the guy (comedy beat), or if Han is just that much of a badass (uh, badass beat?). As a result, it's just kind of muddied, and goes by too quickly to make an impact either way.

Just saw it.
It certainly was much better than Eps I-III. It did recycle lots of the elements from Ep IV, but isn’t that what we want? I think it was a bit too busy – somehow the drama lacks weight in many places. Especially the beginning feels rushed, with Finn going throgh ”oh shit I’m with the bad guys” in a very short timespan. Not that I’d expect deep human drama from SW, but still. The Death Star plans were replaced with a map to Luke, but it got pushed to the sidelines when the fight with Death Star Mk. III took the spotlight, and was resolved with a weak (literal) deus ex machina.
The thing that bothered me the most was probably how Finn managed himself quite well with the lightsaber against a trained force user, despite lightsabers supposedly being Jedi-exclusive expert weapons that require lots of practice to use effectively... and Finn wasn’t that great a stormtrooper, either.
Apart from these nitpicks, I enjoyed the film as a whole and like it how the makers had realized what the good parts of SW were, maybe even too well...
But ”Snoke” is a silly name for a supreme bad dude.
