Just came back home after watching it. The only thing I'll say for now is that I liked it a lot, even though I have some reservations. Hopefully the sequels will be even better! Mad Max was still more awesome though.

I liked it a lot too. Definitely better than the prequels and very near or on par with the originals. I didn't like the Marvel Movies-type jokes sprinkled throughout the movie though. It was a let down that scene between Kylo Ren and Poe, and Poe jokes about who's going to talk first. There are other behaviors from other characters where they become jokers during serious scenes. I'm not a fan of that. I can't believe they fucking killed Han. HAN!

Just walked out. God damn. Good movie. The spoiler above surprised me too. I really thought it was going to be someone else. I have some reservations as well, but they're minor after the fact. The humor as mentioned didn't fit and felt a little forced. The cgi characters just didn't look right among all the practical effects and costumes. Finn came across as too Cuba Gooding Jr. at times. But overall, as someone who's been a fan since the mid 80s, this was a Star Wars movie. It's as close as its gonna get to what we've wanted for years. It didn't feel like a J.J.Abrams movie. He did a great job not throwing in all his signature tricks. He kept it Star Wars. But, unsurprisingly, it's a set up movie. So lots to look forward to.

it was fun, and it did look and feel like an evolution of old Star Wars - especially when compared to the prequels. sometimes it even felt too much like a New Hope rehash with some of its themes and the overall structure. also, I find it weird how well some of the characters handled lightsabers despite the fact that it was their first time using a weapon that is difficult to fight with and requires years of training. but I'm nitpicking, it was a good film.

Loved it. Spend watching most of the movie with tears in my eyes.

You know what would have worked better? If they saved Luke for Episode 8. It would have been cool if the credits rolled right as they hit light speed.

I saw Force Awakens yesterday and had a great time, it's an all around solid movie, the new characters are great, the return of old characters was great and I absolutely loved the look of the film, as a fan of not just Star Wars but sci fi films in general of the late 70’s and early 80’s it was incredible to see a modern movie with a visual style evocative of that era, in fact Han's cargo ship reminded me of the Nostromo from Alien, I wonder if that was an intentional homage?
And it's so exciting to see a return of practical effects in movies nowadays, it's so cool that CGI is becoming just another tool rather than what they use for every single special effect, I loved all the creatures in Maz Kanata's castle.

I loved all the creatures in Maz Kanata's castle. See, I thought that part was too Lucas-like and it reminded me of the prequels. Especially Maz's cgi. I didn't like it.

You know what would have worked better? If they saved Luke for Episode 8. It would have been cool if the credits rolled right as they hit light speed. I actually disagree. Although I felt like the pacing at that point was a little awkward, it felt more natural on a second viewing. Most importantly, the desperation in Rey's eyes as she holds out the lightsaber for Luke to take is a really critical beat for her character. While this film did recycle a lot of plot elements from A New Hope, it did so in order to highlight the differences between the old characters and the new. Rey is a fascinating character, because---although she's set up as the Luke analogue---she actually couldn't be much more different. Luke wanted to escape his childhood on Tatooine, Rey seems bound by a past that she can neither remember fully nor fully forget. Once he learned about the path of the Jedi from Obi-wan, Luke quickly desired to follow that path; Rey, on the other hand, seems terrified of the prospect of being a Jedi. Luke sought to cultivate that power, while she wants to run from it. As she meets with Luke at the end of the film, there's an almost biblical weight to the proceedings:
"And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." (Luke 22:41-42)
I think it's setting up a lot for the sequels, as it leaves open (much more than it ever was with Luke) the possibility that her fear will turn her to the Dark Side.
