Some stuff I think are bad are. Boogerman But it aptly describes the game. Obviously they were trying to copy Earthworm Jim's success.

His original name (if the system is Japan-region) is Marco Rodriguez. Similarly, Tizoc is renamed Griffon Mask. My guess for why his name got changed in North America is probably so it wouldn't get confused with Marco Rossi, as if Garou's target audience are little kids who can't spell right. No. No, NO, NO. It's so they wouldn't catch the attention of real-life MMA Fighter Ricco Rodriguez.

Bagu, now I see the connection with the translation. This is awesome xD I should one day play Zelda II. I never played it, because of the mixed opinions. Don't ever let other people's opinions shape your own. If a game looks interesting to you, try it out! Even if every other person in the world hates it, that doesn't mean you'll feel the same. Personally, I think Zelda 2 is the best game in the entire series, and I've always wished Nintendo would revisit that particular gameplay style. But, I guess the fans have spoken on that... You are right, otherwise I had never played the very first Growlanser or Chulip. I should give Zelda II a try.^^ I used google search and found out that Joshua is a very rare female name: Source: www.babynamespedia.com/meaning/Joshua/fregarding the topic: I don't know if it sounds weird for people, which don't know the German language, but some japanese games have weird German or German-like names, for example: Sieger Neinhalt from Samurai Showdown 2 (translated: Winner NoStop) Opera Vectra from Star Ocean 2 ( it isn't really German or a name, but Opera Vectra = Opel Vectra, which was a famous German car x'D) Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich from Dies Irae (kinda too many names, but the attack names and summons are even weirder, which is funny, because Dies irae is known as a well written japanese Visual Novel, but the German sentences are really weak, they are too long and kinda spoiler, thus I won't mention them) Henne Valkyria from Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (translated: hen or biddy) Wahrschein Lichkeit from the same game (if you put the name together: Wahrscheinlichkeit and that translated: probability "proba bility xD) even the mechas from SRT OG Saga have funny names, for example Weissritter Abend (translated: whiteknight evening) Alteisen Nacht (translated: oldiron night) Yours sincerely Jack Caeylin

I remember when we first played Rockman X3 for Saturn and Playstation, my brothers and I thought the Japanese boss names were pretty ridiculous: Explose Horneck, Frozen Buffalio, Gravity Beetbood, Acid Seaforce, Electro Namazuros, Scissors Shrimper, Screw Masaider, and Shining Tigero.

The situation with Aerith is kinda funny because I grew up in a time when she was called Aeris, so I have to correct myself sometimes. It may be the opposite for people who are used to later works that call her Aerith. Darn kids! (shakes fist)
I thought her name was pronounced like "air-is" in FFVII, but then I heard someone pronounce her name "Iris". Like the flower. Which makes sense, because she's a flower girl. And then I felt silly for not making the connection myself.
Pronunciations of names kinda annoy me when they're different from what I've imagined in games without voice acting (e.g. Zidane in FFIX versus DISSIDIA).

You know for the most part I've switched over to the Dissidia pronunciations. Except Tidus. Who I still say Tide Us. I mean he's on the cover in water. It's so obvious. Also I forget what Zidane was in Dissidia. But, he'll always be Zuh Dain to me. Zuh Don just sounds silly.

Trying to think of other games to talk about in this topic, my mind can't help but turn to Falcom -- a company that's featured its share of both excellent and terrible character names over these many years. Some games, like Xanadu Next, have super-classy, awesome names all around -- names like Lieselott, Fleurette, Lorelei, Charlotte L. Wells, Archibald, Dvorak, etc. Complex, yet distinctly classical-sounding and all very much befitting the game's atmosphere. Some games, like Gurumin and Zwei II, have names that might be kind of off-putting in another series, but fit perfectly in the slightly comedic, goofy, tongue-in-cheek worlds of their respective games. Gurumin's main town, for example, is populated entirely by NPCs with names based on geometric terms, of all things -- so you have characters like Grandpa Hyperbolic. And Zwei II has a bard named Thermidor, which just sounds like a heated humidor to me! But again, the games lend themselves well to these bizarre names, giving them a certain charm that just... somehow works. But then you get to Ys. Ys has some fine names -- nothing wrong with Adol Christin, Dogi, Feena, Reah, Lilia, Elena, etc. But lately, there have just been a handful of character names that seem a little... weird. Ys Seven had "Crshe" in the original Japanese, which we rendered as Cruxie for the English version because... well... "Crshe" isn't actually pronounceable! And Ys Celceta had a character with the rather cumbersome name "Canlilica" in the original Japanese, which we rendered as Calilica (dropping the N) on account of the name just being one hell of a mouthful. Of course, you also have Ys I, with Dark Fact... or is that "Dalk Fukt"? And then there are the Trails games. Most of the characters in the Trails series have pretty decent names, but there are a few that seem kind of iffy. Dorothy Hyatt is officially just "Drothy" in all of Falcom's printed material, for instance. And Zero no Kiseki introduces a character named "Lazy," which is pronounced like "Wozzy" -- which is just kind of awkward on multiple levels! And of course, Trails of Cold Steel has a character named... Jackass. Though that's actually kind of cool. -Tom

I'm sorry Tom, but I've just never liked that one. It's just... still off somehow. I think for the effect you were going for, there needed to be an 'r' at the end of it, personally. That, or I'd have given up on the "EE-EI" sound. But that's just me, and I don't know crap about Falcom and what was acceptable to them, so...

Superfly Johnson from Daikatana. Though it can be considered one of the best in some way, hehe Durak from Sine Mora. It probably sounds OK, but it means "idiot" in my native language. There was also a quite dramatic scene with this Durak dying and a girl screaming at him "Durak" repeatedly... Also... Am I the only one who thinks Samus is a very strange name for a girl? Приветов, кстати

The later Mega Man X games had some fun with the Maverick bosses like in part 5 they were named after band members from Guns n Roses. The worst one I dislike somewhat is the whale boss Duff McWhalen.

Sometimes I wonder why would I bother taking the likes of Garou seriously with someone who has that kind of name? Case in point, KOF has some weird names like K and Heavy D; they sound like names for wrestlers or better yet music performers than fighters. Heavy D!'s name is a reference to a rapper that was around the same time. Who also went under the name Heavy D. I'm still surprised SNK hasn't gotten into any legal issues over that. I guess that exclamation mark at the end makes all the difference.
