Sometimes I wonder why would I bother taking the likes of Garou seriously with someone who has that kind of name? Case in point, KOF has some weird names like K and Heavy D; they sound like names for wrestlers or better yet music performers than fighters. Heavy D!'s name is a reference to a rapper that was around the same time. Who also went under the name Heavy D. I'm still surprised SNK hasn't gotten into any legal issues over that. I guess that exclamation mark at the end makes all the difference. In the 90s, video games weren't on the radar of lawyer as much as today. Also, SNK is a Japanese company. Are you familiar with the naming conventions of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure?

Speaking of which as I'm currently going through Gurumin on my PSP I noticed that the lead's grandpa is literally named "Hyberbolic". I really don't get it, even as a light hearted game that's not an excuse for such a name.

Still better than Crshe, though, no? -Tom I've gotta say "No". Given more time to think about it, I'd have given up on the "ei" sound and just gone with something like "Kirsch" (the I sounding like a long E) or "Criché" if we're trying to preserve it.

For some reason only beat'em-ups come to my mind...
Rolento F. Schugerg always sounded stupid to me. Captain Commando also has a lot of silly-sounding names like "Shtrom", "Organo", "Jennety", "Hoover" and the final boss "Scumocide". Streets of Rage has "Barbon" and "Abadede", and who could forget Abobo of course?

Every single NPC name in the town is named after a geometric term, which is why you have other characters like the old lady named Plane. I kind of like it! It's so weird and stupid, it's kind of amazing. -Tom

Not knowing Japanese, it probably gives me a weird perspective, though.

The situation with Aerith is kinda funny because I grew up in a time when she was called Aeris, so I have to correct myself sometimes. It may be the opposite for people who are used to later works that call her Aerith. Darn kids! (shakes fist) I thought her name was pronounced like "air-is" in FFVII, but then I heard someone pronounce her name "Iris". Like the flower. Which makes sense, because she's a flower girl. And then I felt silly for not making the connection myself. Pronunciations of names kinda annoy me when they're different from what I've imagined in games without voice acting (e.g. Zidane in FFIX versus DISSIDIA). You know for the most part I've switched over to the Dissidia pronunciations. Except Tidus. Who I still say Tide Us. I mean he's on the cover in water. It's so obvious. Also I forget what Zidane was in Dissidia. But, he'll always be Zuh Dain to me. Zuh Don just sounds silly. Dissidia went with Zuh Don to my eternal chagrin. Karous: -The Beast of Re:Eden- is just weird with its punctuation. It's a decent, simple little overhead shooter, though.

As far as "Karous", that's going to remain "Crows" to me.

I'm fairly sure the footballer is called "Zidan", and the E at the end only being there because of french.

And if you wrote that out in French, it would be pronounced [zidã].
English pronunciation is so context-specific that it’s quite difficult to decide how made-up names should be pronounced when there’s no ”correct” pronunciation to go by. But if you go by the original katakana spelling (with kana thankfully being a phonetic writing system), the French pronounciation – that is, [zidan] – is what was aimed at.
