This article is basically just a review. I wish it were more in the classic HG101 format, with character presentations, a plot summary, a more in-depth description of the gameplay, discussion of the developers' history and resume... I've just read it and I still don't know anything about the game, other than a guy named Brian doesn't like it, for rather vaguely expressed reasons. This isn't that helpful. Honestly, some of the articles not written by the site's main staff/writers lately just aren't up to par.

It goes over the gameplay very specifically so I don't really know what you're asking for?
The game was developed by a company called Tam-Tam, who was mostly known for licensed stuff. I added in a quick sentence about what else they did, but it's nothing too interesting.

He meant more of an explanation of the OVA/live-action movie the game was based off of, I think.

Oh. I suppose it could use an introduction to the game world. There aren't really any characters outside of Iria so it's not like it really needs any bios. I've kinda been moving away from those unless it's an RPG or a fighting game that really needs them.

Well damn, now I really want an write-up on the anime that used to come on the Sci-Fi channel. I have DVD's of 8 Man After, Venus Wars, Casshan: Robot Hunter, and Demon City Shinjuku thanks to Saturday Morning Anime.

Well, for example, who's Hyria? What kind of missions is she on? Who is she fighting? What's that ova and movie like, and how does the game fit in with them (other than aesthetically)? Who fan translated it? What kind of weapons do you use, is there any vaguely interesting boss fight in there, etc. I get out of this article thinking I should Google most of that stuff; it's just not very informative. And I had to read the Wikipedia article to find out there's another game starring the same character, Zeiram Zone on the PS1.
And what does this sentence even mean? "Your weaponry suffers a similar fate: not only do they find themselves with a strong physical presence, but because you can get through much of the game without using your weapons, the fights end up lacking any real character." Is he saying that you're not fighting enough, or that fighting bare-handed "lacks character"? What's a weapon with a strong physical presence, anyway?

It means that the weapons are weak and you can avoid combat if you want to.

Right now all the internet has is the hack reviews of Bennett the Sage, who is basically the Irate Gamer of anime. He actually did a scathing review of Iria where all he did was claim the anime made no sense because it didn't take minutes to explain unimportant background details (for example he would point at a computer in the background and say "it doesn't explain this!" as if the concept of a computer is so alien). It would be nice to have a counterbalance to such bad information.

I actually just got the recent DVD re-release of Iria a few weeks ago ago. It's actually a pretty good action-heavy OVA, riffing on various 80s Hollywood action movies like Terminator (most obvious inspiration), Alien, Star Wars, Predator, Die Hard, Commando, etc,.
It doesn't reinvent the wheel or have the most sophisticated plotting, but in terms of *lots* of fast paced action with very few shortcuts in the action scenes (ie freeze frames and cost-cutting camera angles) it delivers what it sets out to do. Iria herself seemingly has an endless arsenal of firearms, grenades, pointy objects, grappling hooks and other gadgets a la Arnold in Commando.
The plot of the Iria OVAs is basically an unstoppable monster (Zieram) stalking Iria, a newbie bounty hunter, across the galaxy (like I said, just like Terminator). Interspersed between all the explosions and fighting is a bunch of political intrigue and so forth.

Are there plans for a review of Zeiram Zone, the Iria game for the PS1?

What's the live action Zeiram movie like? The monster caught my attention. And you I'm just as curious about the OVA and now this second game.
