Final Fight, Final Fantasy, Final Doom and now R-Type Final - another video game title that turns out to be an utter lie!</abbr> Don't forget Final Zone and Final Soldier. At least there was Final Furlong, which only was one game.

Guardic Gaiden/The Guardian Legend.
As much as I like Guardic, I don’t think it exactly set the world on fire. Still, I’m glad they made it. TGL is one of my all time favorite games.

Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 is up there.
I made a comically shocked expression when I saw the headline, while the idea of a new Vampire The Masquerade/World of Darkness game is not too surprising in of itself, a direct sequel to Bloodlines is, especially considering World of Darkness was supposed to have been rebooted soon after Bloodline's release.

Shenmue 3 is out today, which is worth mentioning in this thread. One might argue that it wasn’t exactly unlikely at first cause everyone was actively expecting it back in ca 2002-2004-ish. But then we all know what happened. I certainly gave up hope.
It seems crazy to think that there is an actual game to play now. Shenmue 3 exists! Still, previews seem to indicate that there’s no closure in it as far as story goes, so the big question now is: Will there ever be Shenmue 4? LOL! Sounds familiar?

When did the original earn its Kusoge infamy? I figure having a sequel a few years later isn't a stretch. It DID get a couple entries in modern times out of the blue. Spelunker HD was a remake in 2009, Spelunker World in 2017 as a free to play game by Square-Enix of all publishers. Then lifted its F2P model for the Switch port, Spelunker Party. Party is not bad, you get equipment gear now and pets. Local Co-op I'm sure is fun if you can find somebody who understands Spelunker gameplay.

All of the new games are quite good, honestly. I bought Spelunker HD when it first came out, as I'm one of the few who really enjoyed the original game when I was a kid -- and Spelunker HD is AMAZING for its time. Possibly one of the best remake/reimaginings I've ever played, as it fixed literally EVERYTHING that was wrong with the original, and added so much to it that was new and fun. The real reason I think Spelunker II for the FC is such an odd sequel, though, isn't the fact of its existence, but rather its... complete lack of any connection to the original game. Like, Spelunker II for FC is a WEIRD game -- read the summary in that linked Wiki article, then think back to the original game, and just TRY to tell me that game makes even a lick of sense. It's such a bizarre choice to make THAT a sequel to Spelunker, of all things. -Tom

Bionic Commando on NES/Famicom. What a concept. On one hand, you have Super Joe from the original Commando as a character you need to rescue. On the other hand, you have the gameplay mechanics of the arcade Bionic Commando. Except, when they conceived this game in Japan, it was as "Top Secret:Hitler's Ressurection." As it plays, could you really call it a sequel to arcade Bionic Commando, and the original Commando?

Is Spelunker really a kusoge in the first place? Sometimes I get the feeling that it was a label it got in the West once the concept spread out of Japan. It is a very particular game with almost zero margin for error, but it's all skill without any bad programming. CGW gave the original version a very positive review and noted that it was very challenging but fair and deliberate rather than reflexive.
Spelunker II is very inexplicable though. There's enough of a time gap that it might not have originally been an unrelated game with the name slapped on, but it does feel like it.

It is a very particular game with almost zero margin for error, but it's all skill without any bad programming. CGW gave the original version a very positive review and noted that it was very challenging but fair and deliberate rather than reflexive. I think you're right, and I think it's telling that it only has the "kusoge" label on the NES (and even then, primarily only on the American NES). I feel it falls into the same category as Hydlide, which also only has a "kusoge" label on the American NES -- on its original computer platforms, it's considered a classic, which is why there exist multiple sequels to it (not to mention the Rune Worth trilogy, which some Japanese fans consider to be the spiritual successor to the original Hydlide trilogy). The thing that killed Spelunker's credibility on NES, I feel, is that it came out in the West after the NES had already established its own identity for platformers -- much as Hydlide came out after The Legend of Zelda, Spelunker came out after Super Mario Bros. And while it's a different sort of game entirely (much as Hydlide is a different sort of game from The Legend of Zelda), the similarities outweighed the differences and caused one to be unfavorably compared to the other, leading to a bit of a "stand next to a much prettier person and people will recall you looking worse than you do" sort of effect. That's my theory, anyway! ...But that aside, Spelunker II on Famicom is STILL a really weird sequel. The arcade sequel, sure -- that one feels like an evolution and expansion of the themes presented in the first game (albeit leading to an overall lesser end product IMHO, as I find Spelunker II in the arcade to be weirdly a lot less engaging than the original). But that Famicom sequel is just... something else! -Tom
