YES, you're right. I'm on your side. Back to Touhou, were it localized by a professional company, do you think they'd adhere to all the conventions in the fandom? There are bound to be differences. I've already seen some negative responses to Yen Press's translation of Forbidden Scrollery (one of Touhou's many print works): see here, as Akyuu's name was romanized as Akyu Hiedano (weird move; sounds wrong to me, honestly), and these little details could tick a lot of people off.

Yeah, that's something I was thinking about too. Since manga is print, I'm happy to get an English version at all, but there's no real pros to having an offical translation of the games. Steam version now allows english-speakers to get a copy to patch without having to order a used copy or go to Comiket. The alternative to the Japanese steam version would be... no version.

I hate moe with all of my being; Touhou isn't moe. I will kill over this. A big part of "moe" is girls being innocent and submissive. No Touhou characters are innocent or submissive. Every Touhou character is a violent asshole and they get in fights and drink alcohol all the time. At the beginning of every game, the protagonists are investigating something mysterious that has happened, and to do so they decide to beat up random bystanders. Half of the bosses in the game are randos they beat up for information because they don't have any leads. They just keep doing this until they have an idea of where to go. Honestly I don't even want to bump this thread but I really hate it when people assume that things with all-female casts are sexual or fetishistic. :T I don't know much about Touhou, so I can't speak for whether it is or isn't "moe", but I'm pretty sure if I really wanted to look (and risk winding up on a database somewhere) I could find plenty of examples of young anime girls being violent assholes and still sexualized and fetishistic. That said, my problem with Touhou specifically is just that the character designs don't interest me. They just come off as boring to me.

Yeah, there's lots of bad anime out there, but I don't really understand what that has to do with this. That isn't an equivalency to moe. I'm having a hard time putting this into words because I don't want people getting angry at me... Moe fetishizes innocence itself, which is far worse than just any personality that people may or may not find attractive. Let alone one like being violent and rude, which is the exact antithesis of the innocence and helplessness that moe idealizes! Moreover, Touhou characters are mostly adults and the one bit of sexual content in the entire franchise is a single joke in a 15-year-old game. IDK what you mean about the character designs, can't really figure it out.

OK, I think I get where you're coming from about your definition of moe. I don't follow anime closely so I don't know all the terms and trends. I always thought moe was just lolicon with better branding. Either way, I think we both agree that moe is shit.
I don't see what's hard to understand about the character designs though. They all look more or less the same to me, like they were made from a template. Or like Sonic the Hedgehog OC.

Game is out now, positive reviews all around. What's the price in USD? I can only see my local currency. Seems really cheap. The translation patch only works with the demo for now, they are working on the full version.

From here, I see it's 14.99€/$. I think those reviews (over 600 in a few hours, almost like a fresh AAA release) mostly come from enthusiastic fans that now have an official release outside Japan to buy, and would have given thumbs up regardless. But it still deserves positive reviews, you may not like bullet hell, or the characters designs, but there's hardly any Touhou game that can be classified as bad.

I don't really know much about Touhou, it's just not my type of game. I too had the impression that it was heavy on sexualising young women/girls but after a bit of Googling it sounds like that's not the case and like it does try to focus on the characters being strong and the like. That's nice.

I'm incredulous at how much attention this has been getting. I knew Touhou was popular, but what's going on here is insane. How does this game have more reviews than the free-to-play Yugioh game that came out recently? I'm surprised. Being Japanese-only doesn't seem to have deterred many. EDIT: So apparently Touhou is the highest rated game on Steam

This patch is very impressive, I can't be mad. Well, not at them at least.
