Personally, I think Battletoads in Battlemaniacs on the SNES is the best Battletoads game. It takes everything that was good about the original, trims the fat, and adds some absolutely stellar graphics and music that really push the SNES to the limits. I'd pick that version over the NES original any day.

Donkey Kong Contra. All because of the vertical screen. Super Contra should have had a horizontal screen and the top-down levels are boring. Contra 3 is flat, long levels. Hard Corps is too cool for it's own good. Contra 4 introduces a grappling hook, which goes against all that is Contra. Rastan Saga Boulderdash. In the first game there where often more than one way of finishing a level. Later games, as well as all those homemade levels, where often designed around a single way only.

Good call on Rastan. The first game is great! The sequels... not so much.

The Rastan beat-'em-up is fine. I've never understood what was people's complaint with this game.

If you consider GB Donkey Kong '94 a sequel, then NO WAY.

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen - This one people might disagree with. I know Soul Reaver has a pretty strong following but I have always preferred the Zelda style gameplay and large array of spells and abilities in the first game to any of the sequels. I don't quite get why people like this one so much. At least not anymore, because I too once thought that it was quite good. But after replaying the game two years ago (more tha 15 years after I had played it the first time) I realized that it had aged very poorly.
Blood Omen is a good concept: Zelda featuring an antihero vampire protagonist - sure, why not? And its story and setting are still appealing to me. I even enjoy the slightly cheesy not-that-great-mid-nineties-cgi-cutscenes.
But the rest is a mess: In game visuals are downright ugly, gameplay is clunky and unresponsive and the protagonist's constant "vae victis" battlecry is one of the most annoying sounds in video game history.
Soul Reaver may have its own problems, but I'd say it's a much more competent game.

I agree. I do like Blood Omen, but loading times and clunky game play can really bog it down. Soul Reaver is much more enjoyable.
I also think Diablo is the best of the three. 2 and 3 are obviously bigger and prettier, but I enjoyed the experience playing the first much more than the follow ups. The simplicity of it alone is what attracted me to it, as well as the idea of the single town with an entrance to hell. I always spent my time playing the others hoping to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed my first time with Diablo.

If you consider GB Donkey Kong '94 a sequel, then NO WAY. I do. And let's include the whole Mario/Wario and Donkey/Diddy Kong family of games as well. I'm still holding out for a true 100-level Donkey Kong follow up from Nintendo.
