VS AND VS So, I mean, I was vaguely interested in this because of the "revised" translation for the GBA version. It really just looks like they took the original SNES script, rewrote some lines here or there to make them sound better, and stuck them in. The above changes are weird (although the GBA version of the Shadow line is closer to the original Japanese.) But, just read Sky Render's fan translated script and see how relatively boring some of the lines are in comparison: http://sky_render.tripod.com/ff6script.txt

"Son of a submariner" is the best insult ever. Right up there with "You spoony bard!"
If someone ever called me "son of a submariner," I would say, "Prince Namor had a son?"

I agree, "Son of a submariner" was better. I also feel like the orginal font was better. As for the line about Shadow, the old line sounds more like it came from the tabloids/rumor mill. So to me that's funnier than what the new line says.

Is FFVIA a port of III (American) or VI (Japanese)? Like, did they restore the changes?

There were very few changes to begin with, a majority of which had to do with the translation. "Pubs" are still called "Pubs" (they were "Cafes" in the American SNES version.) However, the Celes scene is still censored even in the American GBA version, and apparently some of the later scantily clad female enemies were covered up a little.

That's really frustrating. I was under the impression that it was censored in Japan specifically because of that high profile kidnapping case (the reason why that one cutscene in Final Fantasy XII is removed from the Japanese version) from last year.

It probably was, they just never bothered to reinsert it for the American release. For FFXII, all they had to do was reinsert a cutscene, but for here, they're need to reprogram a whole event - which isn't DIFFICULT, by any means. They just didn't bother - I think it's more about laziness than censorship.

see, Son of a Sandworm isn't THAT bad, and it kinda makes sense as Kefka just saw Figaro castle sink into the sand while yelling at Edgar.. ...but I agree with the general concencious (sp) that "Son of a Submariner" was far cooler (along with slit his momma's throat for a nickle). I just have to wait and see what they did to my favorite line in the game (the one kefka says right before poisoning Doma)

About not being a waiter I'd imagine? If they change the "You all sound like chapters from a self-help booklet!" line, I shall be most dissapointed. I for one was quite pleased with the SNES translation of FF 6, and give props to the localization team for making it a fun read. Yes, Son of a Submariner is a bit silly, but when you're an evil clown trying to destroy, take over, then destroy the entire world some more, it fits.
There was a fan translation out a while back, I cannot remember where, where Magic-Tek armor became "Magic Using Armor" because it was the more literal version... ugh...

Give me Ted Woolsey's (sp?) script any day over that. Understanding and being able to translate literally is only half of it. Localizing it is the other half. If you translate Japanese directly into English it reads very awkwardly. It's more important to get the gist and then modify it so that it flows naturally.
"He'd slit his mama's throat for a nickel" is much smoother than "he'd kill his own best friend for the right price." It sounds more natural and has a rhythm to it.
However, I feel that "Son of a sandworm" sounds a lot better than "son of a submariner."
I've not played the Japanese version of FF6 so I can't say for sure, but the fan translation is allegedly pretty literal, and it just feels off.

I've been playing through the Japanese SFC version of FF6 for comparison purposes.
Like, you know the soldiers next to Kefka when he sets Figaro Castle on fire? In the American version (and GBA too) they go "Heh, heh, fire, fire!" or something like that, an obvious allusion to Beavis and Butthead. In the Japanese version, they just go "Burn and die." (I'd like to think "Fry and die" sounds pretty good, but I like the "real" translation.)

One thing that everyone's bashing Ted Woolsey about is the fact that the knight guy got half his dialogue lost in translation, hope they added that back...
