I get the feeling that a thread like this has already been created, so feel free to slap me if that's the case. Anyway, I was thinking of investing in a PSP, as there have been quite a few threads about PSP titles and compilations lately. It's gained quite a good library, and I think it's about high time I started getting one. I have some in mind, but I'd like to see what y'all recommend I should pick up.

My recommendations, and reasons why...
- Metal Gear Acid. But if you have to choose between the two, get the second one, as it's got tutorials that will help you understand the game better. - Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. But only if you don't already own the PSX version, as there is little to justify repurchasing it. There is a bonus dungeon, a few extra characters, and new CG cutscenes, but that's about it. - EXIT, or if you don't mind importing, Kangaeru EXIT (the sequel). Sidescrolling puzzle game with a comic book flair. Help the civilians escape from burning buildings, flooded subway stations, and dark tunnels. - Lumines or Lumines 2. If the Game Boy's ultimate game was Tetris, then this is the PSP's answer. Action puzzle gameplay with some interesting new twists, and of course, Mizuguchi's obsession with making everything sync to the background music. - Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. Even if you previously hated the Syphon Filter games, Dark Mirror is actually quite a fun game. Buy it, if only to gain the privilege to set people on fire with your taser. - Sega Genesis Collection. About the best damn retro compilation I've ever laid my hands on. - Me and My Katamari. Need I explain this one?
Anti-recommendations:
- Untold Legends (either of them). An extremely derivative Diablo-style action RPG. If you don't mind brainless hack and slash gameplay with cookie-cutter dungeons and lots of load times, then by all means pick it up - but I don't like it much myself. - Archer MacLean's Mercury. Get the sequel, Mercury Meltdown, instead - the original game had load times through the roof, which essentially killed the experience. - Coded Arms. The first FPS game on the PSP comes equipped with just about the most awkward control scheme possible - you can change it, but it's still a pain to aim afterwards.
Oh, and if you have money to spare after all that, you may want to get a grip attachment accessory. As the PSP stands, the buttons are situated in such a way that you won't be able to have a comfortable grip on the system and be able to use the controls without straining your thumbs after a while (the analog nub is particularly guilty of this, given how close to the edge of the system it is).

As a general rule, stay the hell away from any EA published game. All their PSP ports have an absurd amount of glitches and bugs (even the big names like Madden aren't immune to this).
Most of Capcom's PSP entries are great. Capcom Puzzle Collection just came out last week and has BUSTER BROS. on it among other things.

Honestly, I'd recomend not getting one until later this year. Basically, hold out for a price drop. The PSP's collection is going to get a bit better in the coming months, especially with the Castlevania X Remake (with portable SOTN) and the FFT re-release.

What's up with the FF games for the PSP?
The Gamestop POS lists an enigmatic "Final Fantasy I" and "Final Fantasy II" as two seperate games coming in June and August. Bwah? Originally they had "Final Fantasy I and II" coming out in June.

I thought it already had a price drop to it... I guess another one's due? If so, around when would you say? About three months? You've said the primary reason why I want one now: I've just GOT to have me the Dracula X Chronicles. Oh well... I'll start building a bit of a collection for now until I get the system itself. As a general rule, stay the hell away from any EA published game. All their PSP ports have an absurd amount of glitches and bugs (even the big names like Madden aren't immune to this). Heh... you don't have to tell me twice, Rasa. I would have stayed the hell away from EA even without advisement, but I do delight in hearing further testament to the company's numerous flaws. ;D Oh, and if you have money to spare after all that, you may want to get a grip attachment accessory. As the PSP stands, the buttons are situated in such a way that you won't be able to have a comfortable grip on the system and be able to use the controls without straining your thumbs after a while (the analog nub is particularly guilty of this, given how close to the edge of the system it is). That sounds like a pretty good idea. I've heard some complaints about its grip, so I could use some extra comfort. Thanks for the recommends so far, fellas.

Numerous EA flaws? All their PSP "online" games require you to either pay a one time fee of $2 (despite all other PSP online games not costing anything) or give them an email address so they can spam you. Madden 06 and 07 don't work online despite all the manual/cover/etc. information to the contrary, it just doesn't function. EA's response to this "Everyone has their own concept of satisfation."

Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure is hands-down the best English-language game on the system, with runners-up being Tokobot (though that one's available on PS2 now as well), Me & My Katamari, and PoPoLoCrois (which is a shoddy, heavily-edited port of two FAR superior Japan-only PS1 games, but if you stick with it, you'll find yourself really enjoying it despite its flaws, as the second half of the game isn't nearly as chopped-up as the first half, and enough of the charm from the original Japanese games shines through).
If you're OK with importing, then I also VERY, VERY HIGHLY recommend "Brave Story: Aratanaru Tabibito". Simply outstanding RPG.

So can a U.S. PSP play Japanese games and vice versa?

Yes a US PSP can play japanese games taken that the games are region free.
Two other games that are very much worth pickin up for the PSP are Daxter and Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters. These games are top notch platforming on the go.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner from the PSX/Saturn came out on the PSP also. It's usually pretty cheap (especially if you get the Asian region release, that's randomly clearanced at $14.99 now and then).

If we're talking imports, two other VERY worthwhile RPGs are Princess Crown and Tengai Makyou: Daiyon no Mokushiroku (Far East of Eden: The Apocalypse IV).
And to more specifically answer your question, Brand, region protection for PSP games *DOES EXIST* as an option, but thus far, to my knowledge, no PSP games have taken advantage of it. There is not a single PSP game I've encountered that has not been playable on PSPs of any region.
PSP movies and music, on the other hand, are almost always region-protected. But who really buys those, anyway?

Thats funny that you mentioned Princess Crown wyrdwad cause Atlus just announced Odin Sphere for the PS2 which shares the same 2D gameplay of Princess Crown.

I've been looking forward to Odin Sphere for months now, actually, and anxiously awaiting news on it. Glad to hear it hasn't been forgotten... as I understand it, Odin Sphere IS Princess Crown 2 -- it's sort of a PS2 revival of the previously-cancelled Dreamcast sequel to Princess Crown.
