As a former huge comic fan (I used to spend $40 a week on them), I have to say that the video game industry isn't really hurting comics. Here's why. Comics are relatively cheap compared to video games. Most don't cost more than $3 so if you can afford a $30 game, you can get a couple comics along with your video game. If anything comics compliment video games as people who like one many times like the other. The problem with comics is that there is a lot of crap out there so it is hard to sift through the bad and get to the good stuff. Furthermore, comics are having the same problem as every other form of print. The internet is replacing a lot of publications. Look at news papers and magazines (especially gaming mags). They are loosing readers every day. Comics are no different. It just takes too long for a new issue to come out and the internet sites are free. I think comics just need to adapt to the new market. It's not as if people aren't interested in comic stories as webcomics are very popular now and comic book movies are still a major genre in the film industry. You can already see Marvel trying to evolve right now. The other day I bought a CD-Rom at Best Buy with every issue of Ultimate X-Men in .pdf's for only $10!!! It turns out they have a whole series of these. Hopefully comics will still be around for a good long time, they just need to get away from paper.

There's really nothing out there right now that interests me I was a casual comics reader back in the day X men and Spider man were AWESOME in the early 90s but now....meh.
like I said Civil war is the only thing that even remotely intersts me and I'm waiting for it to arrive in Graphic Novel form before I grab that.
Marvel is very much in touch with it's fans. For that matter Marvel is just awesome period. Their characters have a level of humanity to them. While I find DC to just be souless......God I sound like such a nerd right now......
but I think the big one is the rise of Manga which has a lot of themes american comics don't touch on.

Oh, I'm very much a Marvel person with the exception of my love for DC's Vertigo line. Did you happen to read Morrison's New X-Men a few years ago. It was amazing! Check it out if you get a chance.

I'm a big fan of Udon comics... but that's about it. I suppose I'm 50/50 because it's an American comic company that makes comics about Japanese games.
I used to worry about Manga's influence on American culture... but let's face it.... I was also bitter. I used to get a little peeved at the humble little manga section at the book store in the mall... but now it doesn't bother me.
Now the big question about this topic is... why the HELL did that guy say that games are for pedophiles?! What the hell is he getting at? That has to be one of the STUPIDEST things I've ever heard anybody say about videogames...................... EVER.
Downright stupid.

I wouldn't be bitter except for the fact that in every bookstore around where I live, the manga section isn't so humble or little. In all seriousness, the local Borders literally has about four or five full shelves for manga, and about 1/4 of a shelf for US comic trades. Since I am a comic fan, and have really no interest in manga, it kind of irritates me that I have no choice but to buy online when I go comic shopping. Blargh! Of course, I'm a DC guy, so it looks like I'm already at odds with the other comic people here, as it looks like mostly Marvel fans here!

I wasn't talking too much about comic shops... I mean like... Walden books at the mall. The place where boring old ladies go to buy romance novels and the latest "EVERYTHING IS A DAMN LIE" book by the political show host. But even in my local comic shop... the manga section is pretty small (if it's even there at all... I haven't checked in a while)... but that's the place for all the guys to go and play magic the gathering... and god knows what else. Maybe things are still a little different here in Mt. Pocono PA.

Oh, I was talking about normal bookstores, not comic shops. There really are no local comic book stores in the immediate area of where I live, which is why I rely on buying trades for my comic fixes. And yeah, anime and manga is pretty big around here, which is why there's the huge section for manga. Go to any bookstore around here on a weekend, and it will be filled with people browsing and reading in the manga section.

There is a comic shop across from the pool place that we get our Pool chemicals and stuff from. there's a door connecting the 2 so you can always go in there even if the comic shop is closed.....I'm shocked nobody has cleaned that place out.

Hey, how come no mention of R. Crumb, Justin Greene, Harvey Pekar or Daniel Clowes (and the likes)? Don't ya guys like the self-narrative, messed up stuff?
And I'm really not sure why games are getting blamed for low sales in the comic book industry... Japan seems to be doing fine in respect to manga/comic books still being ultra-popular, despite them having a myriad of video games.

I think it's because, Games are still kind of new and just a little foreign to lots of people. You can't really blame the comics themselves for not sucking = When the movie industry first came around people thought they would replace books and things like that until like, the late 60's

In america there's the stigma/Stereotype that only social outcasts and losers and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_Book_Guy read comics In Japan EVERY ONE reads manga so there's a difference.
