I was a Genesis kid, too, because that's what my big brother got after our first NES died. I loved my Genesis so much back in the day for classics like Gunstar Heroes and Sonic 2. Keep in mind that I didn't get into 2D shooters until about 4 years ago. I did, however, get an SNES around the same time that the N64 came out (I was a little late in getting systems before I could buy them myself) and I have realized that I play my SNES currently more than I play my Genesis. I like them both but I think I put more time into the SNES because of its bigger library of RPG's and Adventure titles.

I was trying to stay out of this topic (seemed like a flame war friendly topic title), but curiosity got the best of me... The only issue the SNES had was Censorship which was later retracted but at the time it was annoying Had it been released uncensored the SNES Mortal Kombat would have been Arcade perfect Censorship was NOA's fault. Nintendo never had a censorship policy. There were even HENTAI games released for the FDS! Most people forget that Sega of America did censor MK. There was a cheat code to take it off, but if you were not aware of that code it was just as censored as the SNES version. Also the censorship only removed blood and changed a few fatalities. It did not remove fatalities, like certain people seem to remember. I am not implying that you were stating otherwise to any of these things, I am just bringing up these facts. Something that I have always considered interesting is that while NOA got so much flack for censoring MK that they did away with their censorship policies, Sega of America never did. There were games that continued to be censored on the Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast. Also, Sony of America and Microsoft have had censorship policies since they got into the video game industry. They both occasionally censor games to this day. The 16 bit wars ARE still going on, but it's a more clandestine battle these days, and a little humorous to hear people tote phrases like "Blast Processing" and "Sega does what Nintendon't" nowadays. The idea that Blast Processing and Mode 7 were once intended motivators to buy a console is quite humorous. That really provides perspective on Sony and Microsoft touting their cell processors or other hardware specifications that nobody cares about. As if people played the hardware. I am definitely with Gunpei Yokoi on this about consoles being nothing more than a "necessary financial evil" (my choice of words, not his) so that people can play the games. However, honestly, Mode 7 is my favorite visual effect in video games ever, and I immediately take notice of it ever time I see it. It makes it even goofier that anybody was ever meant to believe these were high tech effects.

Oh come on, when you were 12 and saw scenes like in Actraiser where you descend down from the sky temple, it really was quite amazing. Yeah, they don't really hold up nowadays and can be easily made fun of, but it was the first time you ever saw something like that in the home.

Like I said, Mode 7 looks fantastic to me. The idea of it being "high tech", however, is rather goofy and gives it a somewhat campy appeal if anything.

That censored Genesis Mortal Kombat has a well known code to restore the blood and gore to the game. I think it was even mentioned around the time the game came out. It's not a Game Genie code or anything like that, but an easy to input code that can be accessed without a cheat device or hacking the game. I'm not completely sure, but I think the hentai FDS games may have been unlicensed, going by what I saw at some ROM site. There were also some "adult" NES games and they definitely not licensed by Nintendo.
