Before I even start, thanks to anybody and everybody who responds to this. All replies will be appreciated.
I am currently working on, as I have stated several times at this message board, two rather large write ups for this site. I am doing fairly well as far as emulating the game, but I am not doing so hot as far as finding a way to get screenshots. So here are my questions:
Can anybody tell me what emulators will work for the following platforms:
Amiga Atari 7800 Apple II Atari ST Atari 8-bit Nintendo 64
Can anybody tell me what emulators can get screenshots in .png format for the following platforms:
Amiga Atari 7800 Apple II Atari ST Atari 8-bit Genesis SNES Amstrad CPC ZX Spectrum Commodore 64 Atari 2600 Nintendo 64 Sega Master System
I also have a few questions about MAME:
Where can I get older versions of MAME32? How do command line versions of MAME work? What versions of MAME will take screenshots in .png format, and how does this work?
Again, thanks in advance.

MEKA for the SMS emulator. That's the only emu I use though I'm afraid...

When I was hacking Pac-Man ( www.twobits.com/sabcad.html ), the command line version of MAME was just putting the ROMs in the specified directory (usually the same as the game name) and typing: "mame mspacman" on the command line. I was also usually running the debug version, which was "mamed.exe". Here's a list of Atari (console) emus: www.atariage.com/howto/emulator_tutorials.html(note that the 2600 also had some of Epyx "Games" series, as did the Lynx) The only Master System emu I used was MASSAGE, and that was years ago.

Off the top of my head: Amiga - WinUAE Genesis - Gens+ or KEGA Fusion SNES - ZSNES Sega Master System - Gens+ or KEGA Fusion (I think this runs SMS games) All recent versions of MAME will output screenshots by hitting F12. I don't remember where to get old versions although I'm not sure why you'd need to. If a particular ROM set doesn't work, you'll need to find a newer set. Definitely don't bother with the command line versions, just grab MAME32. If they don't output in PNG or GIF, you'll need to convert them. Any paint program should work, I think even Paint that comes with Windows can convert it. Not all emulators have sceencap functions. There are two ways to handle this - either hit Alt+Print Screen and then paste the result into a paint program to save it, or I can hook you up with HyperSnap, which will automatically take a picture of the active window and save it into a file with a single keypress. Lemme know and I'll dig it up. I don't think www.zophar.net has updated in a long time, but they have a database of emulators for different platforms. It's a good start, though I'm sure other, better pages have replaced it.

Project 64 is the best N64 emulator I can think of, but there might be better.

If a game doesnt work in Project 64 boot it up in 1964, and vise versa.

Just remember that the philosophy used to emulate the N64 made games playable fast, but there's TONS of glitches and quirks left in even today's emulators and plug-ins.

For MAME use MAME32 or MAME32 Plus. No need to use the command version when you can use a GUI one -For Genesis use GENS+. -For SNES use ZSNES and if a game doesn't work, use snes9x -For ZX Spectrum you'll have it easy. Go to this site (http://www.rzxarchive.co.uk/default.aspx) to download emulator recordings of almost EVERY ZX game and play it using ZXSpin. The recordings are real time, so if you wish to play a certain level, just wait until it reaches there and stop the recording. -For Sega Master System, MEKA is the one that takes snaps. If an emulator takes snaps in BMP format, don't worry, just open the image and go to file --->save as---->PNG.

And don't forget... even if an emulator doesn't have a screen capture option, the printscreen button might still work! Just hit printscreen... open up a new image in your favorite graphics program and hit paste. It works for pretty much everything except Media Player.
And I know... this is a really old tip, but I still use it today.

Printscreen --->paste to a paint program is so 1995 Welcome to the future with Aldo's Screen Capture. Press print screen as many times as you want and then save all the captured images in a single action. aldostools.com/vgscapture.html

*Ker-BOOKMARKED!* There was also a simple program that took screenshots every millisecond, helped alot with sprite ripping. Can't remember the name, but it'd be nice to see that thing again.

There's a program called Capture Eze Pro that takes screenshots every x number of seconds if you configure it to do so. It also takes screenshots of the whole desktop or just the active window, with or with out the windows bars and borders.

ACDSee has a screen capturing command you can assign to a key too.

Are there any screen capturing programs that capture screens from other things plugged into the monitor besides the computer (such as a console)?
