I thought Error was supposed to be a joke? I heard that, literally translated, it was Error and "Bagu" was actually "Bug." Hence, Bug and Error. I herd it was an actual bug and that "Error" was actually supposed to say more than just "I am" but the conversation was corrupted, hence his "name". But then again, his name has "." at the end, so I've begun to lean on your theory Malroth.

I was curious so I checked it out. He's just saying "My name is Error...". I guess they had to cut the "my name is" part and shorten it to fit in the ROM, which explains how awkward it is. Man the leveling system is screwed up. I love how you can choose which area to upgrade, but when you lose all of your lives, all of your levels are dropped to whatever your lowest stat is. It's to encouragte distributing your skills evenly. On the flip side, you also level up a lot quicker, since you're intended to do it every time you start the game.

This totally changes the way I would play the game. In the US version I skip the upgrades for magic and life and upgrade attack to level six or so before I even bother with anything else since you keep your levels but lose all your XP when you get a game over. That way WHEN I inevitably have to start over I can go into a more advanced area and quickly level up magic/life.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all the conversations just one "frame?" Seems like things would be a lot less awkward if they allowed the conversations to scroll.

Also, with the way you translate Japanese, couldn't "Error" actually be "Errol"?

It could, but the katakana "ERA-" is the actual word that displays on computers when an error is encountered. It would be very odd for that word to be translated as anything OTHER than Error, as Error is obviously what the writer was going for -- especially with another character named "BAGU" living nearby.
Also, while ERA- could indeed be translated as Errol, it would be a bit of a stretch, as the name Errol would typically be written in katakana as ERORU or E-RORU.
