Aside from a different looking Temple 7 boss, different sprites for the enemies & fairies on the map screen, a rock golem (?) instead of a black spider and a couple of different looking townspeople, the game also has a LOT of extra sound effects (like a train kind of sound the Thunderbird emits) and different sounding music. Pretty nifty.

Pretty sure the American version got a different boss. Helmet Head was it? It was the guy in the 2nd dungeon.
That, and I'm pretty sure the American 2nd dungeon was like the 5th or 6th in the Japanese version.

I really need to play more of this, I know a bunch of stuff was changed but I wasn't exactly sure what. The battle music in the NES version is MUCH better though.

That youtube video (and another one linked in there) shows all the differences.
There is an extra boss added on the American version where the Japanese version just had a repeated one. The FDS version also has a mid boss in a temple that was removed from the NES version. But it just was the temple 1 boss again. All the temples have the same colors in the Japanese version too.
I played the Japanese one and all the temples were exactly like the American version, except the removal of a statue or ornament here and there.
But all the keys, doors, bosses, elevators, hidden paths were exactly like the USA version.
Parish said (on the latest Bonus Stage) that the world map was also a bit different in the Japanese one and I can testify that it's not true. What it does have is water and swamp animation.
The FDS one is a LOT easier too, you get a lot of exp points all the time and you can hit all the enemies anywhere you like, unlike the NES one in which some enemies had specific weak points.

I think he may have been referring to the different sprites for the monsters on the map, though without the video in front of me, I can't remember.

You know, it's funny that after all these years of having the Japanese Zelda 2 available through emulation, almost no one bothered to talk about the differences or even show screenshots of it until recently.

I'd like to think that somebody was EXTREMELY bored.

Not really. Unless you hate Zelda 2. It only took me a few hours to beat the Japanese game and see all the stuff by myself.

Zelda 2 is pretty easy to hate, to tell you the truth.

Probably no one realized there were any real differences. On the surface, it looks roughly the same.
I know I'd wanted to download it a year or two ago when I heard about the changed music, but it's very tough to find ROM images of Nintendo games (and to a lesser extent, Square games) since they're one of the few companies that actively pushed to abolish it.

Just in case, I have a few ftps you could use. Also, the entire FDS collection is on the Hub you gave me by clicking on my name

Doesn't belong here, but you could destroy the Pols Voices in Legend of Zelda by blowing on the famicom controller microphone. Didn't even know that until a year ago.

Yup, I heard about that a few years ago.

This sounds neat. Link's Awakening for the b/w GB (not sure about the color one) also has some interesting differences from the JP one. I read an article about it at dmgice a long time ago, but it doesn't seem to be up any more.
