A friend of mine wants to invest in one of the new NES "third party" systems coming out these days. I knew one of them was supposed to be crap, but I'm not qualified to say which one to get. He said he even saw one for $80 that does NES and SNES all in one. Any recommendations?

Tell him he's better off just getting an original NES and cleaning it up, or getting an AV Famicom (the one that looks like the top-loading NES) and cart adapter. All of the knockoffs use the same crap hardware the and have the same crap compatibility, so the fancier models are just polished turds in the end. The one that supports SNES, too, which is the FC Twin, seems to actually have pretty good SNES support, but the NES is the same sort of hardware that's in the rest of the famiclones. I've heard some conflicting reports about its accuracy with SNES games, but compatibility seems to be spot-on. You won't get S-video or RGB out of the system for SNES games without a simple modification, though. NES is composite only, as usual. nfggames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2521

FC Twin has the best Compatability of the bajillion famiclones.
The NEX is also worth looking into as it has good compatability but the graphics take a hit

If a knockoff can't even play CastleVania III, I wouldn't say it was "good compatibility." Stay away from the NEX. -GoTaS

The NEX can play Castlevania 3 with some issues but the game still runs
Don't forget Castlevania 3 has a chip in it too so getting that to work on something else isn't easy.

I know there's one that does run it but sound is screwy or something.

You're better off getting the original NES or SNES, but if you're going to get a clone, get the FC Twin.
You can get both an NES and a SNES for $80 or less if you're lucky.

Considering I have four Famicom games that have that extra chip for enhanced sound, finding the FC clone is hard as hell for me. I already have a Sachen Q-Boy, and controller 1 port tends to crap out.

The only reason to get the original NES is to have a NES with full compatibility, but it is hard on the eyes. Thes famiclones are teh sexy.

I forget the name of it, but I got one of those NES knockoffs for 20 bucks at a local Fry's. It didn't play Dracula's Curse, though, so I sloughed it off on someone for his birthday.
I hope someday that they release a good compatibility FC Twin. My SNES's getting old and crotchety, and my damn Super 8 makes weird lines appear on the NES game screens.

Stay. The hell. Away. From the Messiah. It was massively hyped, and then there was a ton of issues with it playing...games.
I don't know if it's gotten any better since, but with that track record you're better off leaving it alone.
