10. Metroid 9. Blades of Steel 8. Wizards & Warriors 7. Dr. Mario 6. Punch-Out!! 5. Shadowgate 4. Contra 3. The Legend of Zelda 2. Castlevania 1. Super Mario Bros
Honorable mention: Ninja Gaiden Platoon Tecmo Bowl Kid Icarus Ghosts 'n Goblins Faxanadu Crystalis Mega Man II -----
What the shit is this? Castlevania over Castlevania 2? Mega Man II and Ninja Gaiden as "honorable mention"s? Blades of Steel over anything? (OK, I'm just being incredulous for the sake of being incredulous, but seriously, I didn't even know it had music.)
Missing: Bionic Commando, Mega Man III, Tecmo SUPER Bowl, Batman, Blaster Master, Phantasy Star, Zillion, Wonder Boy 3, Life Force, Duck Tales, Super C, Ninja Gaiden 2 (and possibly 3), Metal Gear, Zelda II...Christ I don't even know what else.
This also totally ignores Gameboy music (Castlevania Adventure and Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge!) and any other systems that could qualify as "8-bit". Anyway, let's make a better one.

Either the guys at Ign live in an alternate dimension where the only 8-bit system available was the NES or this is another "unbiased" chart focusing only on the american audience.
As for a 10 "kickass 8-bit tunes",here's my personal list:
1. Bionic Commando ( Commodore 64 ) 2. Zillion ( Sega Master System ) 3. Journey To Silius ( NES ) 4. Gargoyle's Quest ( Gameboy ) 5. Turbo Out-Run ( Commodore 64 ) 6. Castlevania 3 - Dracula's Curse ( NES ) 7. Nemesis The Warlock ( Commodore 64 ) 8. Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge ( Gameboy ) 9. Nodes Of Yesod ( Spectrum ZX ) 10. Sagaia ( Sega Master System )

Holy shit. Ha ha... Good ole IGN. Hey, all those games have fine music but... couldn't they have been a tad more creative?
1. Air Zonk (PCE)-- Some rockin' 6-channel tunes with heavy percussion control. 2. Mega Man III (NES)-- Not sure why, but I prefer these over II's. I especially like the Wily levels. 3. Turrican (bunch o' systems)-- Chris Huelsbeck's stuff is nice. 4. Gradius II (NES)-- Love the ending theme. Konami's soundchip gives NES music a boost. 5. R-Type (PCE)-- Very close to the original's soundtrack. Addicting as ever. 6. Mother/Earthbound Zero/Whatever (NES)-- Sounds snappy. 7. Ganbare Goemon 2 (NES)-- More Konami stuff. Very fitting music. 8. Shatterhand (NES)-- Surprisingly good (albeit predictable) music! 9. Faxanadu (NES)-- Weirdly memorable tunes. 10. Goonies II (NES)-- Cyndi Lauper on my NES!? SWEET! I mean... NOOOOO!
Honorable mentions:
Parodius: funny to hear classical music redone in 8-bit. Castlevania III Final Fantasy III
and... yeah. All that stuff we already know is good like Zelda and Mario and whatnot.

Schbibinman isn't 8-bit.
And wow, Kurt. That list is... mm..
What's up with Zelda in the 3 spot? That's pretty much a choice they made based on how much they loved playing the game as a kid, not how good the music was. LoZ has what.. 3 themes? None of them are really any good so much as they're memorable. Same goes for SMB. And how the fuck does SMB outrank even SMB3? God.
Those may be the only 10 8-bit games anyone at IGN has ever played.

Hmm, I dunno, TG16 MIGHT qualify, considering it was only the graphics processor that was 16-bit. Assuming the sound was done by the main CPU, it could be considered 8-bit. Unless they just meant "8-bit" systems, but I'm sure I'm thinking through these semantics way more than they did.
But it's clear that by "8-Bit", they just meant "NES" - and even then...just...wow. I admittedly can't pick too many C64 soundtracks, just because I'm not too familiar with many that aren't arrangements of songs from other platforms. (Except for maybe Boulder Dash, but that had like...one song.)

Brainless picks made to appease the fans. That wasn't "Best NES (8-bit, whatever) Soundtracks", it was "Our favorite NES games that we happen to also like the music in".
A Total lack of Sunsoft efforts like Super Spy Hunter (aka Battle Formula for those out there that insist on using a game's Japanese name), Batman, or Journey to Silius (RAF World) is damn near criminal.

I don't know about Blades of Steel NES, but the GB one has one (yes, just one!) music track during play. It's really good, but not one of the best either. Besides one tune doesn't qualify as soundtrack.

The Neo Geo has an 8-bit processor, so a list of the top 8-bit music ever would be pretty easy. IGN's list is pretty awful, no Sunsoft? No sale. Blades of Steel has no music during the action itself, but the music it does have is very good. I'd rank it far below any other Konami offering on the system except Adventures of Bayou Billy, but it's very good. I'll keep mine confined to the NES due to my lack of knowledge of other purely 8-bit systems: Blaster Master Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Contra Dark Lord Gargoyle's Quest II Journey to Silius Magician Mega Man II Megami Tensei Power Blade Honorables: Castlevania Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Dungeon Magic Mega Man Moon Crystal Snake's Revenge Super C
