www.hardcoregaming101.net/skateordie/skateordie.htmTwo comments: (1) Is it just me, or does the skateboard shop owner look like a punk version of Rodney Dangerfield? Even his name is the same! (2) I remember playing lots of Skate or Die! in my youth...but after playing it again to grab some screens, I seem to have faint, repressed memories of renting it. I can't remember! Or maybe I just read a lot about it in Nintendo Power. I had the tendency to do that...

(1) Is it just me, or does the skateboard shop owner look like a punk version of Rodney Dangerfield? Even his name is the same! Oh, everyone knows about that! I remember playing the NES version of the original many a time in the past. I kinda sucked at it, though. I was really only good at the Jam sequence. However, I've improved quite a bit at it lately and it's a damn fun game indeed... though I still bloody suck at the race part, because, as zzz mentioned, the control is atrocious in that scene. It's too bad SoD2 is a big load of carp, but at least it exhibits the finest power of the NES' audio qualities. \m/

Doesn't the Midway skateboarding game 720 Degrees warrant at least a mention for coming up with the phrase "Skate or Die!" as uttered by the digitized voice when taking too long in the game's hubworld?

I've used to rent both Skate or Die and Ski or Die for the NES back in the day. The Snowball event in Ski or Die.
As far as I'm concerned, Ski or Die is the only Skate or Die sequel ever made. Every other game was just an unnecessary cash-ins.

What's Ariel the mermaid doing in Skate or Die 2?
Skate or Die 2's cover pic says "GB cover"

The Tour de Thrash section could use a picture from the Stale Fish Tour.

I remember renting Skate or Die because I thought it was 720 just because of the audio clip.

I played this before long ago, but like the Genesis port of California Games, I couldn't understand the game's controls for shit, and kept getting my ass kicked in Joust.
Also, yeah, Skate or Die 2 looks (and plays) absolutely disgusting and is the main reason why I cannot eat in front of 8-bit games.

Ugh. The original version of the first paragraph may have been more opinionated, but it was also noticably more natural. The whole point of it was basically to say that this is a skateboarding game for people who don't give two shits about either skateboarding games or skateboarding itself. And the last paragraph about EA: "among the many excellent titles that EA produced in their earlier years" - WTF!? What else was there besides General Chaos? Is it just me, or does the skateboard shop owner look like a punk version of Rodney Dangerfield? Even his name is the same! That's probably what they were going for. Also... No Skate or Live? I thought that woulda been kinda cool - It's a good song! How about at least sticking up the title screen music from the C64 version of the first game?

BTW, the volleyball game King of the Beach was also a spinoff of Skate or Die. At least it featured Lester as an opponent.

I don't mean to flame but the article really needs a lot of work. It's very opinionated, with use of slang unusually seen in other HG101 articles. I also has some light profanity and semantical errors. For example:
> which prompts you to get revenge by destroying the mayor's wife. Uh...holy shit.
> That's easier said than done, because the controls are a pain in the ass.
> Oh, and shooting people with your "paintball" gun..
> This is largely because every freaking thing in this game blows immeasurable amounts of ass, not the least of which is the controls.
> this is the "Double Trouble" alluded to in the title..
I can't see why profanity is needed for this article. It sounds more whiny than humorous. I can tell which games the writer likes and dislikes and there is very little objectivity. Even the spacing of the pictures seems unorganized. Maybe it's my browser, I don't know. It's not at the level I see in other HG101 articles.

And the last paragraph about EA: "among the many excellent titles that EA produced in their earlier years" - WTF!? What else was there besides General Chaos? Electronic Arts was generally a fantastic publisher through much of the eighties and even early nineties. Their console output wasn't quite as good, but their computer stuff was generally well regarded. It wasn't until they started buying out companies in the mid/late 90s that they got the reputation they got today. I still gotta dig up that song, I might put it up later. I left the slang in for now too, just to see how it reads. I don't understand the objections to the "Double Trouble" and "paintball" lines though. One is explaining the title, the other is sorta poking fun at the rather dubious explanation as to why you're allowing to skate around town shooting people. They really aren't profanities at all. The spacing if of the pictures is a bit off because a few of them use pics from both the C64 and NES versions - the C64 versions have a higher horizontal resolution but it throws off the width of the column.

It's not at the level I see in other HG101 articles. I've been sitting here for a while trying to come up with the right way to address this. I was going to break all of your comments down and reply to them one by one, but I'll just get straight to the gist of it instead. What your complaints boil down to is basically that you don't like the tone of the piece. That's cool and all, but the thing is this: HG101 is not an encyclopedia, FAQ site, or review site.Formal language and a pretense of "no subjectivity allowed" are for encyclopedias. Collecting trivial details is for FAQs. And reviews? Reviews are buyer's guides. And since these games are no longer on the shelves, what would the point be in reviewing them? It even says right in this site's Article Submission Guidelines that "The central idea of any article should be: Why is this game interesting?" It also says that, when writing articles, "you need to be able to make them relevant and make the reader understand why they should care." ... So, that being said, the point of writing with a more casual tone is to meet those two goals. By avoiding bland wording in favor of a more natural conversational tone, it makes the article more approachable and does a better job of keeping people's attention. Lastly, about the mild cursing that you said was "more whiny than humorous": I wasn't trying to make some kind of juvenille jokes so much as I was just trying to convey the kind of reactions that you're likely to have if you play those parts of the games yourself. Saying "shit", "freaking", and "ass" are accurate descriptions when you're talking about shitty games that suck freaking ass.

I'm sure we can all agree that casual writing doesn't necessarily imply using those kind of words. Keep the casual tone, but if you are still into writing articles 5 years from now, you'll most likely regret having used them when looking back. Why not do away with the habit as soon as possible?

Great Article. The language or tone didn't bother me at all. I just have to nitpick a couple things, mostly about Ski or Die.
You can also stab the other player with forks and darts and things, and pop his innertube, and the fact that the race is mind numbingly slow facilitates combat. This was also the only 2 player simultaneous event on the cart, and is way more fun against another person
Okay, it sure looks like the "other obstacle" is a penguin with a beergut and a mohawk in the amiga screenshot, but I distinctly recall the NES version having chainsaw wielding rabbits. For some reason, I feel like that should have been mentioned.
