So, while the thread is still bumped, I might as well mention: They're making an HD remake of the 1st game. Yay.
If I knew where to find screens (I know I saw one once) I'd put them up, but I can't find any.

I don't think there are any screens yet. The game is also coming out for WiiWare, so I doubt it's going to be HD.

There's also a pretty nice port of the first episode for the iPhone I got to play at GamesCom. It looks just like the original and plays a lot better than other platformers on the system.

Since the article was first made there's been several ports (Earthworm Jim HD, something for DSi, WiiWare, maybe iOS). Are they any good? When can we see an update on the site?

There's no WiiWare port. The only things Interplay released on there are a pretty good MDK2 port and the atrocious Stonekeep: Bones of the Ancestors. But yeah, it would be nice to mention those ports, especially EWJHD since it's apparently got some cuts (the Special Edition's exclusive level wasn't included, even though the game itself seems to be based on it, and I think it was also missing Who Turned Out The Lights) and bizarrely enough the image for Jim's face used on the HUD was actually stolen from DeviantArt and mistaken by Gameloft and/or Interplay as official artwork. They later apologized to the guy but still, wow. It also sadly doesn't have Doug TenNapel's classic voice clips They did get a new guy, but it's not as good.

They did put in a few levels, such as one that has you battling a Keyboard Cat knockoff, but much were missing.

Nice, detailed article although I actually like the more unconventional levels in Earthworm Jim 2, which I don't think are gimmicky (except for the isometric flying stage) but perhaps a middle ground mixture of the more standard platforming in EWJ 1 & the unorthodox type levels of 2 would've made a more balanced game.
I think one important thing about the graphics that's not mentioned is that the Genesis version of EWJ games have a higher video resolution than the SNES versions. This means you can see more of the level in one screen on the Genesis vs SNES. It makes the SNES have a more zoomed-in look. For example, when you fight the garbage can sub-boss, on the SNES version it actually moves off screen while in the Genesis version you can always see the garbage can sub boss on screen at all times. This in my opinion made the SNES version harder to play because you don't see as much of the level. Having been so used to the Genesis version, I really could not get used to playing the SNES version even though it had nicer graphical effects and backgrounds.
The replacement of the worm swing with snot swing and snot parachute is not as redundant as it first appears. The snot swing is actually more reliable than the worm swing. It's faster and the snot areas that you can swing from have a larger target area to swing from as opposed to aiming the tip of your worm at a tiny hook. But on the downside you always have to jump first before being able to do the snot swing. Then again I think the worm swing could have just been made faster and more responsive for a similar improvement. I think the reason the helicopter head was replaced by snot parachute is because in EWJ1 tapping the jump button triggered the helicopter head so it was possible to accidentally jump upon landing on the ground while doing the helicopter head. I certainly remember this inadvertently leading me to accidentally jump into enemies and even pits, the change in EWJ2 just means you might waste a few bullets upon landing.
This goes to show you how much I played the EWJ games to notice such details.

Yes, the smaller horizontal screen size and as a consequence, limited viewing range, of SNES versus Genesis/PC is known, and quite a few games suffer from it. Consider for example Lost Vikings. Probably the worst example is Prince of Persia 2, which forces scrolling within a single screen. This is due to the SNES's unconventional, almost square, 8:7 ratio.

I wouldn't say it's unconventional...the NES used the same resolution, as do most PC Engine/TG16 games, many 80s arcade games, and a good number of Genesis games too.
It was definitely, however, not great for computer ports, nor any game where the Genesis was the primary development platform. Both the Genesis and SNES could run at 256x240 for resolution parity, but only the Genesis could run at 320x240, which created instances like this, with a smaller field of view and thicker visuals. Cool Spot had the same issue. Same developer, too!
Seeing this bumped reminds me that I need to download the HD game before it randomly disappears from the marketplace, like other games have been doing lately, so I can update the article.

This article needs some updatin'.
The last page claims that the cartoon never had a DVD release. Amazon.com seems to disagree on this front--though its page has people debating whether its a legit release or not (there seems to have also been a Region 4 release)
