From what I've played, not really. I haven't tried Air Duel but Shell didn't seem to like it. Lethal Thunder didn't seem that impressive either. I know there are a few more but I can't remember them. Stick with R-Type/Dragon Breed/X-Multiply.
Speaking of which, I definitely want to expand on this article to include most of Irem's arcade history. Barring really early stuff like Spartan X and 10 Yard Fight, here's a tentative list of stuff I want to cover:
Battle Chopper / Mr. Heli Ninja Spirit Image Fight Meikyuu Shima / Kickle Cubicle X Multiply (GOOD HEAVENS this game rocks) Hammering Harry Blade Master Gunforce Lethal Thunder Image Fight II (technically PCE CD only, but eh) Hook Atomic Punk 2: Global Quest (is this emulated?) Mahou Keibitai Gun Hoki / Mystic Riders Air Assault (I also can't find this emulated) Ninja Baseball Bat Man Dragon Breed
Have I missed any?

I'd think any post-apocalyptic Irem game would be relevant for a thread with this title. Yeah, I meant the US version of a port which even isn't from Irem itself. DA, your list is too short to reflect Irem's goodness properly. Here's mine by release date (original names, only): BATTLE BIRD YOUJUUDEN KAIKETSU YANCHAMARU R-TYPE MR. HELI NO DAIBOUKEN VIGILANTE SAIGO NO NINDOU IMAGE FIGHT MEIKYUUJIMA LEGEND OF HERO TONMA DRAGON BREED X-MULTIPLY R-TYPE II AIR DUEL MAJOR TITLE DAIKU NO GENSAN: BERANME MACHI SOUDOUKI POUND FOR POUND GALLOP KEN-GO GUN FORCE: BATTLE FIRE ENGULFED TERROR ISLAND CROSS BLADES! THUNDER BLASTER BOMBER MAN UNDERCOVER COPS QUIZ F1 1, 2 FINISH R-TYPE LEO MAHOU KEIBITAI GANHOOKI MAJOR TITLE 2 KAITEI DAISENSOU FIRE BARREL HOOK SHISENSHO II PERFECT SOLDIERS YAKYUU KAKUTOU LEAGUE MAN GUSSUN OYOYO BOMBER MAN WORLD GEOSTORM DREAM SOCCER '94 Edit: Although if you're including Image Fight II, you'll need to take a look at some other home systems - For example, Daiku no Gensan (Hammerin' Harry) originated on the FC and had a superlative SFC episode, not counting the GB and the pachinko versions. I'd indeed dedicate a whole article just to it!

Awesome, thanks for the list. I'm gonna skip a couple of the more boring ones (quiz games and those one or two puzzles games) plus R-Type has it's own article, so that's already taken care of. I'd definitely want to cover the console ports of some these too (Vigilante, Kickle Cubicle, etc)
I'm not even remotely familiar with Hammerin' Harry, I download it but haven't tried it yet.

A. Hammerin' Harry is a good Irem action-platformer with a fair degree of zaniness and bad Engrish. It also had a hyper-obscure Famicom-only sequel that I didn't even know about until I worked the OPCFG and received an email from an HH fan. B. Personally, I think Lethal Thunder's a damn good shmup. It can become quite taxing on the fingers, though. C. Somebody REALLY needs to do an article on Ninja Baseball Batman. I mean, ninja baseball playing robots! What more do you want?! How about some of the most colorful graphics I know of and a solid fighting engine that has special inputs for hidden power moves? I'd say it is tied with Undercover Cops for Best Irem Beat-em-up. But no, Batman isn't in it. D. Remind me to play X-Multiply again... the game is so much like R-Type (atmosphere-wise, anyway) that Irem practically ripped themselves off. Though, I haven't played it in ages, so I could be wrong. Man, Irem had some of the awesomest arcade games ever, many of which I get lots of enjoyment out of. They sure have fallen from their glory days, though, but at least they're still around. ADD: X-Multiply is damn cool! Also very freaky... there's almost no mechanical designs in the levels, it's all organic. And am I the only one really creeped out by the eyeballs in the title screen?

Pretty interesting article. I hadn't even heard of any of the titles (not that I can recall, at least). I'll have to remember to pick up In the Hunt for PlayStation some time. And what the hell publisher is Kokopeli? o_O Never heard of 'em before.

And what the hell publisher is Kokopeli? Never heard of 'em before. I have no idea. Sounds like two words of Finnish, translated in English as 'full' and 'game'. ;D

This topic reminded me of LOW G MAN, but then I remembered Taxan made that, not Irem. :/

Hey, it's an underrated game. Played it all the time in my younger days. It's got its faults, sure, but makes for a nice futuristic action-platformer.

Are these Vertical Shmups by Irem any good? I enjoy R-type and Irem alway's does great hori's but I've never seen vert's from them before. Image Fight and the PC Engine CD Image Fight II are both decent. Didn't like Air Duel or Thunder Blaster. Irem's horizontial games are much better in my opinion. Especially Dragon Breed! That game is totally wicked for a non R-Type game! Suprised that one didn't get a home version. A lot of shmups from the early 90s didn't. Xexex and Dogyuun are a couple more examples of shmups that deserved home versions! Xexex could of easily been ported to the Sega Saturn.

By the way the guy who brought up Low G Man is seriously awesome! First time I seen someone post about that game in any message board.
On topic, Irem made one NES platformer shooter called Metal Storm. You control a mech that can defy gravity and walk on ceilings. Anyone here played that gem? The game cartridge itself is quite uncommon though.
