I love Metal Storm! I'm pretty sure I showed it to Kurt at some point. Nice amount of parallax scrolling in there too given how much stuff the speed the game moves at. Low G Man is great as well. Also Dragon Breed got many a quarter from me when I was a kid and I play it on MAME quite a bit now. I always loved this gem. I think you and maybe one other person on the www.shmups.com forum really seem to be into it that I've run into. I've NEVER met someone in person who played it in an arcade. Great game and it's a shame it's so unheard of. If I weren't a lazy slime I'd do an article on it (and Outzone too, my other favorite overhead game only people on this board will have heard of).

A. I've seen nothing but praise about Metal Storm, and I can totally see why! It's equal parts challenge, good design, and innovation! Lemme tell ya... your ultimate test of gravity mastery is the level 6 boss battle. A damn hard challenge that be! Basically, you have to switch gravity like crazy to avoid the electric floor and ceiling with these three spinning machines. Ironically, they're the only thing saving you from being destroyed, but you must somehow destroy all three! It's a real tough, I tell ya. And if you look in the background, you can indeed spot a big Warship from the likes of R-Type! B. I should play Dragon Breed again. A damn ingenious shmup that reminds me a bit of Saint Dragon. I find it real cool how the rider can seperate from the dragon. A bit damn hard if I remember correctly, but it IS Irem we're talking about here. C. How good is FixEight, the sequel to Outzone? I hear it's somewhat lacking.

FixEight to my mind has a lot of cheap deaths (moreso than Outzone which was just blazing fast and hard) due to how the characters are built. The enemies attack as aggressively and as quickly as in Outzone but your sprite is a bigger, slower target. The eight characters do have two different weapons each (switched by walking over glowing pads rather than picking up a C item like in Outzone) but many of them are too specialized for general use. The music and speed of the game can't touch Outzone.
Not a bad game but not a great one.

*probably because it's the oldest.
*Its R-Type-ish ways will frustrate you
*known for its shoot-em-ups
*as the experience is much closer to R-Type.
*you could jump into war vehicles
* eleven (yes, eleven) war vehicles.

Irem started with IPM Invaders. Then Takashi Nishiyama created Moon Patrol along with Kung-Fu Master. There was also Zippy Race/MotoRace USA. Before Pokémon Snap, Irem created Gekibo: Gekisha Boy for PCE/TG16. See also Spelunker: knowyourmeme.com/memes/fc-nes-spelunkerIrem did not develop Mashō/Deadly Towers, but published it for developer Lenar.
