EXMaster, mind if I get a copy as well? Being a Thunderforce fanatic, I'd love to discover some of the other versions of TF1 - the PC-88 version is indeed pretty horrendous. Well done with the article btw, nice to see the best shmup series (you heard me ) get coverage on HG101.

My first experience of Thunder Force is a little wierd. Okay, so I was at this house of my family's friends, and they have this Mega Drive with a handful of games. One of those games just happened to be Thunder Force 4. I didn't read the manual, I never do. The first thing that boggled me was the stage select, which I thought was a glitch, since I didn't notice anything change when I pushed some buttons. In the end I was at that top stage, freaking out at the complex system (this was my first side-scrolling shooter), awed by the huge stage. After going through the level, I got scared of the ominous music and the descending into a forest of seaweed. I turned the system off. And didn't return to that game in a few years.

Thanks EX, got it. But even the Sharp X1 version (despite some speech samples, and a Thunder Force 4-style title-scroll), is pretty poor. By comparison, TF2 is such a huge jump in gameplay, visuals and overall quality! But still, this is an interesting little relic to keep hold of.

Yeah, from what I've seen and researched, the MZ-1500 version is the best looking and has all the extra music/voice samples: homepage3.nifty.com/mzakd/starthp/subpage10.htmlKinda want to track it down, but like you said, TF1 isn't really that great. I think it's more interesting to play it and realize how far Technosoft came with the series and their other games from that start.

Still, that version (well found by the way - never heard of the MZ-1500!), looks to be the best of the lot, and just maybe it is better to play? Lets hope it turns up someday.

well, since nobody's brought it up, it looks like Thunder Force 6 is still underway, but under the title Broken Thunder. There was a big deal about it at the shmups forums last month. EDIT: More info on the game here.

"Regardless, their appeal lies simply in the fact that there just well crafted and refined games."
They're
"Other than the title change (and the moronic misspelling of the word "lightning", the American version has a bug in the options screen that grants you 99 lives if you set your ship count to zero. "
Parenthesis never closes.
I noticed the word Vasteel in the TF5 part. Is that a common word for robots? Because there are a couple of PC Engine CD games called Vasteel 1 & 2 by working Designs too.
Also, the boxart for TF1 says "american cover" but the title is in Japanese.

When it comes in the mail and I have some time to sit down with it, I guess I'll write up a piece about it and shoot it over to Kurt to amend the article. That could get me to stop being lazy and finish some of these other articles I started.

Let me know how it is. It was coming out the week after I was leaving Japan, and I was ALMOST tempted to take a train back to Akihabara during my layover in Tokyo to pick it up, but the stuff I've been reading on the SHMUPS board seems to indicate that it is not great.
Plus $40 for a doujin game? Jesus christ.

apparently, the Thunderforce VI engine was used in Segagaga. So was the music. download the first file here and then jump to around 28:30.

hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/thunderforce/thunderforce.htmThis one needs a review of Thunder Force VI for the Japanese PS2. I have the game and can take pics, I just need a review of it. I might try to take care of this one eventually if no one else can, but I'm shallacked for time at the moment. Also, does anyone have a copy of the doujin shooter Broken Thunder? I know it was pulled from shelves but I can barely find a torrent anywhere! I want to at least mention it, if I can't find a playable copy.
