Yes, it was founded by ex-Iguana members. However, I thought at first it was pretty much just Iguana changing names, but apparently not. I mean, they went from making crud like Aero the Acro-Bat, Turok and South Park (eep!) to Metroid Prime. Now that's going a long way.

I had Magical Quest and Bonkers back in the day, they were both awesome imo.

Retro was made up of ex-Iguana members? That explains where all the talent went after Turok 2, I suppose. Not really. Two of the guys that worked on Turok Rage Wars (Jason Behr, Mark Pacini) and one dude that worked on South Park w/ Jason (Don Hogan) were part of the team that did Metroid Prime, but that group was pretty damn diverse anyway. I mean, they had Zoid from the Quake scene, dudes from Ion Storm Austin, Blizzard, Bioware, Lucasarts, The Collective, FASA, GOD, etc. Suggesting that Retro was mostly ex-Iguana or even anything close is a gross exaggeration. FWIW, Mark was lead designer, Jason was one of the designers and Don was one of the artists.

Magical Quest was pretty rockin', but yeah, Castle of Illusion was undoubtedly better.
The best of them all, though, was Quackshot, starring Donald Duck. I think that was a Sega/Disney collaboration, but whatever it was, it was damn good. (:

I know that Jeff Spangenberg left Retro soon after Prime, so it doesn't have much ex-Iguana members anymore as far as I know.

Pretty cool, but I'm hoping for a collection of their SNES games. The Magical Quest trilogy, Aladdin, Goof Troop... and Bonkers. I guess. Definitely not their best licensed work.
Speaking of which, somebody should do articles on all of those. I'd be down, potentially.

Virgin's Aladdin really captured the mood with more hand-drawn style graphics. At the time, it was the most like the movie, brought to life in video game form. I prefer the gameplay of SNES Magic Quest, but the graphics and design of Castle of Illusion on Genesis/Mega Drive.
