NES unlicensed one? Is that like the Famicom one? I'll have to try and beat it to find out.
Anyway, the arcade ending is pretty goofy, kinda like Golden Axe. It reveals that all of the characters in the game are "actors" (i.e. a guy unzips a wolf suit, the princess takes off her wig) and they all go out to have a drink. It's hilarious.

There's a Famicon version? Awesome. I'm off to Akihabara tomorrow.

Yeah, Altered Beast is a pretty putrid game. I always end up arguing with people who think it's some sort of great classic. I guess nostalgia and the fact that the Genesis version was so close to the arcade version means a lot to some, but a bad game is a bad game regardless of if it's a good port.
Nice read, though. I too didn't know of the existence of the PS2 game, and I never knew about those goofy endings either. And holy cow, that PC Engine intro is freakin' UGLY. o_O

Noticed that the article was updated earlier today, so I thought it should be posted. www.hardcoregaming101.net/alteredbeast/alteredbeast.htmJust a few quick notes: 1.) Who is the author for this article? I know Kurt originally wrote it, but there is no name on it. 2.) The Sega System 16 Vol. 2 soundtrack picture is down. 3.) On the related articles, the captions of the game titles do not match the picture (Dynamite Deka reads "Games by Kenji Eno and Dynamite Dux reads Bad Mojo). It's really awesome to be seeing all of these older articles getting a revamp.

Yup, it was still me who updated it. It's not hugely revamped, just expanded on the core text a bit. I found that my original review was a little harsh - going back and replaying it now, I don't think it's a TERRIBLE game, but it is most definitely a style-over-substance case. The main reason I went to play it was hearing the music on that System 16 CD. I don't think I ever comprehended how excellent the music is - it's very understand but has some nice percussion.
Next up is 7th Dragon, then maybe After Burner? I've got an actual review of After Burner Climax written up, along with nice screens, but I need to go back and get some stuff on the early computer ports, plus new screens for Sky Target and maybe Black Falcon.

"(They chose to make up their own Greek-like god rather than using Hades is unclear.)" --> There should be a "why" to open the phrase. Also the choice of not using Hades may be due to the fact that he's not inherently evil as he's often depicted - if anything, in Greek mythology he does much less douchey acts than his brothers, and he reigned not only over our equivalent of Hell, but also over Paradise and the entire afterlife in general.
What a pity about Project Altered Beast. The concept could work wonderfully today, especially in a 3D exploration game with areas accessible to different beasts, but it all went to waste.

Good article. Two things: - The Dragon uses his fist to shoot, not his mouth. It´s difficult to see, but really. - The stages aren´t infinite if you don´t transform. The boss will only appear three times. The third time, you´re going to fight him no matter if you´re a beast or not. Basically, you die, because you can´t even touch most of them.

Few minor mistakes in the labels on this one: screenshots labelled "(Arcade)" actually for the Famicom, etc, and the link in the Spotlight Article section of the main page reads "Hang-On", though it still links properly.

Will pictures of the 3DS version eventually be added to the comparison section?

It looks 100% identical to the Genesis version, so there's really not much point.
I would like to add 3D screenshots of some of the other games (Hang-On, Space Harrier, Galaxy Force II) since they have widescreen, but I have to go through the hassle of transferring all of my eShop purchases from my XL to my screen cap capable 3DS.

I never really understood why Altered Beast was one of the pack-in launch titles for the Sega Genesis. Sure the graphics looked cool at the time, but the gameplay is literally one-dimensional; in most levels you can only move left or right. I still played the msdos version though, because it had pretty cool adlib music.
