I never really understood why Altered Beast was one of the pack-in launch titles for the Sega Genesis. It made sense at the time. It was a popular arcade game, and while it's not QUITE identical, it's close enough that most people figured that it was like having the arcade game at home, which was the big selling point of the system. It's less awkward than the 3D titles and more visually impressive than Thunder Force II, which even at the time got fairly mediocre reviews. It was easily the best of the launch games. Obviously changing it out for Sonic when it was released was a better choice though, since it was more family friendly, and a better game too.
