Yeah, they did Commander Keen GBC, and the GBA ports of Doom and Doom 2, which were based on the Jaguar port, the crappy GBC Earthworm Jim, and a couple of licensed games, including Babe. (Seriously? That's the best license you could get?) Not around anymore, to my knowledge. You sure about Doom 2? Cause the official company site doesn't mention it at all. The GBA Doom II was done by Torus Games, not David A. Palmer. Doom II GBA isn't based on the Jaguar Doom. It's a port of the PC Doom II.

I'm sad that there aren't comparison screenshots for the first three games.

I'm pretty sure the first game would look identical across all 3 platforms anyway.

Yeah, outside of superficial differences, the games don't look very different from each other at all. Comparison screenshots really only work for games that are substantially different between platforms.

Still sad, but I see your point. The comparison screenshot seems to be more or less up to the author of the article it seems.

I know that at least in Germany the first 3D-Gex was much better received than the article makes it feel to me. The game received high scores (about 85 - 90 out of 100 points) everywhere with very few flaws for the timeĀ“s standards, with 3D-platformers being a young genre. It was also remarkeable because it took a bit of the wind out of the sails for the N64, because Mario 64 had been so hyped and deemed absolutely impossible on the 32-bit machines. And while Gex 3D did not quite get to the level of Mario 64, it was regarded as an impressive attempt that came surprisingly close (leaving the earliest 32-bit-counterpart Croc far behind).
The second Gex really was an important milestone in the console wars of the late 90ies.

I recall it being fairly well received in the US as well. It got a glowingly positive review in the April 98 issue of Ultra Game Players (8.0/10) and IGN rated it similarly. Haven't got my other mags from around the time around to check...there might be something up on RetroMags.
Seems like one of those games that received some mixed-positive scores at the time but gets dumped on in retrospect (like Shaq Fu).

It just hasn't aged very well, I think.

It just hasn't aged very well, I think. Yea, I'm a little worried about firing up the game and playing it again, only to find out that it's nowhere near as good as it was when I last played it a decade ago. At the time I loved it...but man.. reading all of the negativity about it makes me wonder if my rose tinted glasses are thick enough to overlook its problems. Probably going to pick up Gex 3 on PSN, while I'm at it

I will say, for a Playstation game, the 3D ones were very nice looking despite the pop-in.
3D platformers are one of those genres that reviewers loved in the day but people tend to ravage on. I was never really a fan of them to begin with, even back then...

Why the hell am I necro-ing old threads?
Anyway, just a small correction: the Saturn version of Gex was released in Japan too (http://www.segagagadomain.com/saturn2/gex.htm)
Maybe Weasel used the release info on MobyGames as a source?

Yeah, I should really stop trusting Mobygames. Yeah, sometimes when it comes to release dates they shouldn't really be trusted. There's this awesome site one of the MobyGames approvers gave to me a few years ago. It has the Japanese release dates of many, many games. It's this: homepage2.nifty.com/gamedatabase/index.htmlIt's actually what I used for many of my release date contributions on there.

I don't know why I didn't post this sooner, but here are pics of Gex's Planet X and some weird shit that happens in one of the stages where a human shadow vomits and starts bleeding (I think it's because I hit him). Check the bottom pics for that. I don't know if that's supposed to happen there or if it's a random easter egg. All I know that stage was a huge warp labyrinth and I just happened to come across a dead end when that happened. www.vgmuseum.com/images/saturn/01/gex.htmlAlso, here are pics of the special ending, which I doubt anyone had the balls to do. I have four balls apparently, because I did this on both 3DO and Saturn. And I don't even like Gex. None of them. Anyway, typical of European endings, the special one is filled with jokes. (I also Shred Pixels apparently). But most importantly, it has TONS of development stuff such as artwork, a different intro, storyboards, sketches, notes and more. www.vgmuseum.com/end/3do/a/gexsp.htm

There's more on the way, too, as Bobinator happened to track down a book based on the games that I'm supposed to be getting in the mail sometime soon. Judging from some of the passages he quoted to me in IRC, it probably gives the Worlds of Power a run for their money.
