And emulators, and SCUMMVM, and screenshot capabilities, and so much else. I got a 16 GB MicroSD card with a memory stick adapter, it doesn't even fit half my games but it does fit all of the ones I'd vaguely play regularly, and it's really awesome to have them all in one place.
It's a pain keeping up with them though, because newer versions tend to read old saved games as corrupt and you need to go through a whole rigmarole to switch between FWs to get them to read right, plus upgrading to make sure newer games work, and any issues with the PSN...

That's why I'm perfectly satisfied with official firmware, personally. (: I see the detriments outweighing the benefits of switching to CFW for myself, without a doubt. The frequent inability to play new games ON THE DAY OF RELEASE (or sometimes even on the week of release!) is the one that REALLY made me decide I would never, ever install CFW on my PSP.
And having my savegames get screwed up sure doesn't help, either!

Wow everyone has really gone above and beyond for my little old PSP, it is appreciated. The cable thing is an unfortunate oversight on my part. but I have heard so many things about PSP2/PSPhone that spending an extra 20-30 dollars on the system itself did not seem practical, especially since the used games are between 9-20$ making the extra expense somewhere between 1 and 3 games. The games are really blowing me away with the great cutscenes and graphics but it does seem like one high maintenance system with its limited battery life. The sound of the UMD spinning can be off putting sometimes especially when you think the sound is the game. I used to be a big phantasy star online fan, but never appreciated universe or zero, I wonder how the PSP versions are, but as no one mentioned those I will have to assume to worst. I will be acquiring a good portion of what has been said here I think I will try the ps3 version of class of heroes, I played EOIII not too long ago and that little voice in my head that likes wizardry style games is still in a coma from the beatdown he received from strata 3.

but it does seem like one high maintenance system with its limited battery life. I think the PSP battery life is surprisingly good. Since you bought a used PSP-1000, your battery is likely ~5 years old and barely holding a charge. They're not cheap, but a new battery will improve things a lot.

I'd just point out that Lithium Ion batteries degrade from the time of manufacture, even if they're not being used. I'm not sure if there's dates on the packaging for PSP batteries, but if there are, this is one case where it might be wise to go brick and mortar over online, so you can see what you're getting.

Oh, crap, I knew I was forgetting something!
Phantasy Star Portable is a great game, and Phantasy Star Portable 2 is even better. I definitely recommend both, but I *especially* recommend 2. Ys games aside, it's one of the best action RPGs on the system.

I ranted about PSP2 elsewhere on these forums, and on saint-ism. So yeah, I second grabbing it.

My only gripe with Ys 6 on PSP was all the loading. The game is classic action-RPG that harkens back to stuff like Secret of Mana, which is really cool when every other RPG out there are FMV crapfests or have "unique battlesystems" (read: crap) just for the sake of being different. But the loading in Ys was tedious sometimes. I bought the game for PS2 and I absolutely prefer that version. But it's still worth playing through the PSP one if that's your only option.

Another, more expensive solution to the whole firmware-switching thing is to just have a separate PSP. I ended up getting a 3000 cheap on Black Friday and don't regret it. Now my 2000 is a dedicated emulator machine (that, and I don't use eboots beyond say PSX games, so firmware to play boots of new games isn't an issue).
Anyway, really enjoying the Xseed Ys releases. I haven't finished 7 yet, but I'd have to say I enjoy Felghana more so far (not having to switch players is nice). Also, Phantasy Star Portable 2 is a lot of fun, although partially dependent on you liking or being tolerant of PSO.
And FYI, the special edition of Felghana is selling for 25 bucks on Amazon today, so check it out if you don't have it already.

I was more recommending Ys Seven and Oath in Felghana, neither of which have any load times to speak of at all. (: For Napishtim, I'd definitely recommend the PS2 version over the PSP, by leaps and bounds. -Tom

I don't think anyone's mentioned Dissidia yet, but if it has an insane amount of (re)playability and the gameplay doesn't really get all that tedious as long as you try out different characters. Obviously you'd have to be a big FF fan to enjoy it, but it's definitely got some solid content (and that Amazon deal has it at like $10).

Heh, actually, as long as we're mentioning Dissidia... there are a couple other Japan-only licensed character fighting games that are pretty decent, too. Higurashi Daybreak is a fighting game based on the anime "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni," a.k.a. "When They Cry" -- and despite some load times and low-poly models, it's actually pretty fun. And "Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki: Alternative Saga" is Falcom's answer to Dissidia or Tales of Versus, pitting characters from Ys Seven against characters from Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, with cameo appearances by just about everyone else from Falcom's back catalogue.

I was debating on picking up a "collector's" copy but didn't. Be forewarned, they packaged it in an envelope and I had to send two copies back because the box was crushed so badly. As for Ys 6, I've got the PS2 version (which I never got around to playing) but was debating getting the PSP version for completionist reasons. And while I'm still on the topic, Tom, thanks for your efforts on the Ys games and thanks to Xseed for bringing them over! I haven't played nearly enough Dissidia, but I agree, it's a great game for playing in both long and short spurts, and is an "unlockables" fan's dream (or an obsessive/compulsive nightmare, depending). Probably the longest install of a console/handheld game to my memory, though (1 hour)...heheh. For 10 dollars it's a steal. Other PSP games off the top of my head: "My Lord! What did I do to deserve this!?" (forget the whole name) was pretty fun and has a good sense of humor, but to be honest I still don't understand how to play it right. Has anyone else tried it? People have probably mentioned them already, but the Konami shooter collections are a must-buy.

and screenshot capabilities Could you elaborate on this? Does CFW make taking screens of commercial games easier? Because I could screengrab stuff then. It's a bit old, but I'm getting tempted to do a Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke feature for HG101, since it's actually based on an old PC flash game. Much easier. I have a plugin that runs in the background, I took these shots with it, it basically grabs a single draw from the screen.
