I have great memories of playing this on my crappy 90mhz during summer of 05. Its one of my guilty pleasures and I actually consider it one of my favorite games, or at least favorite of this genre (with Nocturnal Illusion being another top favorite).
And I rather liked the music.

That was my second porno game, after Knights of Xentar (damnit Atma, write that article!). I had a flashback to True Love when playing Persona 3, thanks to the "relationship" stats you needed to build to get the S-Links.
Of course, perhaps the same could be said about all Eroge.

Neat. Didn't expect to see this game featured here. I have fond memories of playing it for hours in the past, along with Season of the Sakura and Knights of Xentar (Dragon Knight III). And I rather liked the music. Same here. // Oh yeah, almost forgot. Thanks Audi for the article and telling about the Akane character. Her appearance in True Love always baffled me.

It's interesting to read about the huge difference in reception for the title in the different markets. True Love also is quite a remarkable release as I remember reading that a some point the western H-Game translation market picked up the most hardcore titles they could (as there was a perception that they would sell better). To have one of the first tentative steps be a much more sedate title is curious.

This also brings back memories. I never played it much but I remember it being a more subdued title, given the genre as a whole. (Yeah yeah I see you up there Jojo~)
I like how we're all bonded happily and nostalgically to be a porn game. Without really being crass about it. That's honestly pretty cool.

I'm pretty sure at least the first Pia Carrot game had a stat system before this did.
Come to think of it, how many games outside of this and Pia Carrot actually have a stat system? It seems to be the main distinction between proper dating sims and an eroge visual novel, and for some reason a ton of the latter is available in English but almost none of the former is.

Not to get into spoilers, but TL had some disturbing undertones toward the end. There was a point later on where depending on who you pick to spend your time with, another girl is "shut out." Considering what happens during each path, the girl you don't pick is presumably either raped by a panty thief or date-raped by the game's resident douchebag, respectively.
Of course it's kind of a Schrodinger's Cat situation, but still...
I'm also curious to find out what the original girls' ages were (given that the game A) is Japanese and B) came out prior to 99, when they tightened up CP laws). Arisa always made me wonder, because it's obvious that she's a LOT younger than the other girls. The game even makes a big deal about the uh, "compatibility issues" ...

Ah, being underaged and playing a hentai game where you date a girl who's probably underaged as well. Those were the days.
From the article
Speaking of voice acting, anyone else heard the english voice acting in the game "Casual Romance Club"? Its something really awful. It was voiced by Japanese women who apparently had little to none actual english skills. Thank god it wasnt fully voiced.
Someone needs to Youtube it.

True Love wasn't bad. I got into it around 2002. That was right around the time I read Kana Little Sister, and became a fan of romance games and visual novels. After True Love was released in English, there was almost nothing with similar gameplay in English for several years. It seemed like if you wanted a game about relationships, you either had to become a fan of western RPGs, visual novels, or you had to become one of the super-dedicated fans who learned written Japanese. And then we got the following complex dating simulations: * Love Hina Advance (a 2002 fan translation of a GBA game) * Bloody Bride Imadoki no Vampire (a 2003 fan translation of a Playstation game) * Summer Session (PC/Mac/Linux indie game, 2008) * Fading Hearts (Windows indie game, 2009) * RE: Alistair (freeware, March 2010) * Sakura Wars: So Long My Love (PS2/Wii, March 2010) * Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side (DS version, full fan translation released in December 2010) * Shira Oka: Second Chances (PC/Mac indie game, December 2010) * Love & Order (PC/Mac/Linux indie game, February 2011) * Always Remember Me (PC/Mac/Linux indie game, April 2011) * Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 2nd Kiss (DS, full fan translation released yesterday) Note that all of the above games are worksafe. They'd probably get an ESRB "Teen" rating at most. Fans have created some "sim date" games using Flash. Sturgeon's Law definitely applies, as a number of these games have competent gameplay but also out-of-character swearing and poor characterization. I'd say my favorite so far is Pacthesis' game Chrono Days Sim Date. Not many of the complex romance games of the 90s have been translated. Thanks to Matt's Messy Room, we have a translation of Pia Carrot for PC-FX, which has a decent amount of stat/schedule gameplay, and some NSFW content. And from what I hear, the TLWiki group is working on Yu-No, which was a combination of graphic adventure and plot-with-porn visual novel. But if you want the original Sakura Wars story and you don't read Japanese or Russian (translated by Akella), then you can only experience it through the officially translated spinoff comics or the anime TV series. This sounds fucking amazing. I have to hunt this down now somehow. Casual Romance Club wasn't bad. It didn't have statistics, but it challenged the player with schedules, and having to make good use of time and date coupons. Its translation could use some work -- and some of the dub names are silly, but I enjoyed it, and its packaging is nice. You can find it for about $20 on J-List.

Yeah, I wasnt implying that. Just the voice acting is horrible. Otherwise its a pretty nice game.
I just realized that I havent actually played lot of dating sims (plenty of visual novels though), but another one I'd recommend is Maid's Story. Another nice game with stats and scheducles, although technically its about training maids rather than actually dating them (but you do get to give them "Night Training" wink wink nudge nudge).
Also, putting Sakura Wars for Wii on my Wish-list.

Also, putting Sakura Wars for Wii on my Wish-list. Go for the PS2 version if you want the Japanese voice acting.

Also, putting Sakura Wars for Wii on my Wish-list. Go for the PS2 version if you want the Japanese voice acting. It would be a nice bonus, but.. 1. The PS2 I have is technically my sisters and she's eventually gonna snatch it off from my shelf and take it with her, leaving me, uh, playstationless (and Katamariless, but I'l never give up God Hand!) 2. NA release only. Our PS2 is unmodded. 3. I always look for opportunities to enhance my Wii collection, just to prove that there's good games (third party even) for it. Of course, Im assuming that there's nothing wrong with the english voice acting.....right?
