By the way, it's possible to get a "Special Bonus" in a boss stage. At least you can in the fight with Ken-Oh. I never thought it was possible, but if you jump close enough to his head, you can perform a jump kick. By the way, I still consider continuing in a game that uses a checkpoint system as credit-feeding (especially since Shinobi keeps track of the credits the player uses). Even if you restart a stage after dying, the hostages you've already rescued in a stage don't need to be saved a second time (meaning that there will be less Mongolian swordsmen to fight).

I'll have to try Shinobi again after reading your tips, jonny. I usually don't like the idea of using limited abilities to get high scores (most common example is not using bombs in STGs), but it actually sounds kind of fun in Shinobi's case. Plus, it actually makes sense from a ninja standpoint. Also interesting to learn credits aren't allowed on the final mission, similar to Rastan Saga's last stage. I wonder what other arcade games do this.

E-SWAT also had a no-continue rule for its final stage. And while it's not the same thing, both Contra games, Haunted Castle, and the first Rolling Thunder had limited continues as well.

Replayed the game a bit and it doesn't seem you can pull off a "no shuriken" clear in the other boss stages. At least not with the Black Turtle chopper and Mandara statues. It might be possible to do it with Lobster and the Masked Ninja, assuming the ability to do jump kicks on Ken-Oh might not had been a programming oversight. By the way, here's a Japanese TV ad for the Sega Mark III version (you'll need a Niconico account to access it). www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm5087606

Might as well bump this up because it's the Spotlight article, with a write-up of the new 3DS game courtesy of Derboo, along with a general bit of polish to the rest of the article.

The text says Shadow Dancer for SMS was only released in Europe, but it was released here in Brazil too.

That's correct, should be "PAL territories" instead. Might wanna check Cyber Shinobi, too.

There's also yet ANOTHER Revenge of Shinobi version, the one from the PC Sega Smash Pack, which, at least according to Wikipedia, seems to be a beta ROM, as some of the stages have plenty of bugs. I'll just paste the text:
EDIT: Joe's face from the Wii RoS looks a little... weird, to be honest. At least he's not crosseyed like NES Shinobi Joe.
Speaking of VC releases, Shinobi III also had one, on all three regions.
And on the topic of Legions/X/Shin Shinobi Den, Sega's Shinobi retrospective on their blog also comments on the acting. Apparently it's "as good as that of Night Trap" (http://blogs.sega.com/2011/11/11/shinobi-retrospective-part-iii/#more-11058)

I actually tried that never-ending jump-kicking technique on Ken Oh that Jonny mentioned. It's tricky to pull off, but awesome nevertheless.
I wonder if you can get special bonus points in the ends of rounds 2-4 as well?

Regarding the "Hulk" boss in RoS: He may be green in that pic, but I think it's obvious that it's not the Incredible Hulk we're seeing there, but a very well-known film character (and another Sega flirtation with copyright law). Take a good look at him: the brown hair, the sunglasses, the overall resemblance to a certain Austrian actor/politician - and the fact that when you defeat him, his skin explodes and reveals a robot endoskeleton, before it too explodes. I don't know about you guys, but it's always looked like the Terminator to me. Also, this: "The third version includes a copyright by Marvel, indicating that Spider-Man and Hulk were official cameos." I remember seeing Spider-Man mentioned in that copyright notice, but not the Hulk.

I think he is like a fusion between the Hulk and the Terminator... I wonder who is the mother?
