Independent games? You mean stuff like Cave Story, Lyle in Cube Sector, rRootage, and other freeware classics? Or do you mean independently published games that still require a purchase (stuff like Samorost 2 and PopCap's games)?

If the game is good, why not? Just because a game was never published by a big company or sold retails doesn't make it lany less of a game than one that was.

They've never been closed, really. I've just never been into independent games. The "best indie game of 2005" or something was this game called Gish, which was innovative and all but wasn't very good. Practically every Japanese doujin game I've played has been a variation of some other game just with more anime girls (and usually not as good, even Melty Blood was kinda eh.) I feel kinda strange admitting this, but even Cave Story didn't draw me in. The physics were wonky and I have issues with characters THAT out of proportion.
I'm sure there's good stuff out there and I'm all with accepting contributions, I've just never found anything worth covering.

I feel the same way Kurt does, for the record. People are like "ooh you gotta try this and this and th-" and I'm like HEY. There's certainly hundreds, if not thousands, of commercial quality games I haven't checked out across all the different platforms - I'm not that desparate yet!

Some of the doujjin games are pretty good. The copy i got of melty blood was pretty mediocre but this "Destruction Desire" game is pretty awesome.

Warning Forever is a blast to play even if it's just repetitive shooting. A find that alot of the Indie stuff are way better than some of the regular console offerings. I purchased PGR2 just so I can play Geometry Wars! What about Indie stuff that was released on consoles? Like from sites such as gooddealgames.com. I've always been interested in some of their Sega CD offerings just to try them out. And games like Beggar Prince for the Sega Genesis?

Thought it's a tad incomplete (with only 9 of 10 levels up) Stinkoman 20X6 at www.homestarrunner.com is pretty good- the game play of Mega Man and an old school shooter, plus a wonderful sense of humor in how it parodies earlier and often badly translated games of the 8 bit era. When it's finished, I'll get a write up on it if there's any demand.

It seems that most everyone here is referring exclusively to Japanese independent games. So allow me to recommend some British ones, adventure games in the style of Sierra and LucasArts: 5 Days a Stranger 7 Days a Skeptic Trilby's Notes All of which can be downloaded from here

And... well, it is Homestar Runner, of course. ;D But are they ever going to get that last level out? I think it's been on hold for nearly a year now...
