Free MMOs are always always awkward, since most are either really bad (or basically grinding grind grind) or are sitting in open beta waiting to go live.
Atulos online seems resonably popular but I'm fairly sure it's a grindathon where veterens spend all day PKing novices. Nothing is really action in MMO and free, a second MMOFPS running on Touque (Tribes 2 engine) which is planned for free is RUIN Online.

Gunz is pretty fucking sweet actually. Looks a bit better than half-life 1 And runs smooth usually with no lag unless you play with tons of people.

I've been playing Cave Story over the past few days. It's a really solid game, though it's also a reminder on why I need to get my control pad back since the boss I'm at (the giant dozer in the Pit), keeps ruining me. Definitely Metroidish in a way, though it possess a nice bit of humor and heart as well. My only real problem, probably due to way it was ported to OS X, is how it keeps crashing to desktop at a rate that makes Morrowind look perfect.

My problem with Gunz is I'm in Australia so I get hit with quite a big brick of lag. I use to play it, may redownload at somepoint or at least check if my character still exists though I remember the community been pretty ordinary.

Unfortunately I stopped playing Gunz a few months ago: basically it was getting badly hacked- a friend even had his character deleted by someone :\ Theres some definate cheating that goes on, shame, it could be a great game without all of that!

Hey that's funny since I recently checked out all the new remakes at retro, some keen stuff there like the Firestarter one and others which elude me.

I would highly recommend some of those Castlevania and Robotron: 2084 remakes. If you go to that website for "R-Tronic" it has a sequel to download.

Small download for a decent freeware train simulator. Just go down to where it says "download" and download the first .exe file. www4.ocn.ne.jp/%7Elv-river/

If only I didn't passionately hate train simulators..just way too dull for my tastes.

You could try arcade style vehicular simulators like Densha de Go! then. They are game play based rather than actual simulations and extremely challenging. They look like simulators, but do not have any actual simulation elements and do not require a interest in simulators.
