This coming month, Sotenga, Snarboo, and I will be playing Snake's Revenge. Totally cold. No FAQs, no save states. Just graph paper and this thread. At the end of November, we'll be recording the first Game Club 199X podcast about our experiences. Then in December, it's a new game, new help thread, new podcast hosts. We thought it would be cool to play randomly-selected games as a community experience. One question I do have about the podcast itself: should there be a moderator or third party to make sure that everyone is there and talking about the game? Obviously they wouldn't have to talk or be involved with the actual podcast. Perhaps they could record it though?
Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to this. I actually haven't played through most of the Metal Gear games, new and/or old.

For podcasts, I'm gonna start with just three people per. The roster can change with each game though. Rasa wants to be on a few of them, for instance.
If three people can't stay on topic for 40 minutes about a game, then I guess we're doomed. I'll be cracking' the whip for the first few shows, though.

This idea sounds fun and I'm looking forward to it... so much that I've decided to come out of my forum hiatus for the greater part of this year. No one needeth maketh a fuss over it. Anyway, we decided on Snake's Revenge as a good starter as it can potentially take a while to beat and has a somewhat non-linear structure to it. It's not as obtuse as the "official" Metal Gear games, but the action itself can be somewhat dicey... mostly in those sidescrolling bits I hate so much. Regardless, it should be fun to play (even if it's not a GREAT game), and I hope anyone else will be interested in playing it with us throughout the month of November.

I absolutely loved Snake's Revenge - it had such a bad rep, but I was craving another 2D MG game after clocking MG2:SS on MSX and MGS:GB on GBC, so I thought what the hell and tried it - and you know what, I sat there astounded at how cool it was. Once you get past those lights, it gets very cool very fast - not to spoil anything, but the opening ruse is genius. If we're talking 2D MG games I prefer it to the first game, even the first MSX title. MG2:SS > MGS:GB > SR > MG1 (MSX) > MG1 (NES) > MG1 (DOS) > MG1 (C64) Word of advice: be careful with passwords. I've played it through a few times on just the hardware, and there was one incident, notably on the train, where the password they give you, when later inputted, actually skips the rest of that stage and warps you to the next section. Which kinda sucks since you miss a key cut-scene. So try to play through with as few password inputs as possible. If you can. I'm really looking forward to hearing this, hopefully you give it some fair coverage. Remember to keep in mind that it's closer in terms of design to MG1 on the MSX than it is MG1 on the NES, for example with two tiers of alert level, and so on. As for the stupid story, the manual was written by some brainless intern at Konami who fucked with pretty much every Konami NES manual from back in the day, including MG1 and Mission Impossible.

Good luck.
The two things I hated about this game the most:
1) The unrelenting response time of the pitfalls (it wasn't THAT bad in MG1 and MG2)
2) The Tank boss battle (it made the Tank from MG1 look like a walk in the park).

If you can deliver that all to me that I'll be happy to put it up on the site.

Yeah, I won't be doing anything but playing this with whoever wants to join me, then recording a short podcast at the end of the month with a few others. THere's already a lot of great scholarly/archival sort of stuff out there on old games. I just thought it'd be nice to play some as a group if they were new and just came out.

Don't stress it, sir. You're allowed to play via emulator! That's what I'll be doing since my NES has poo brain and I haven't been bothered to fix it just yet.

I'm already stuck! First boss is five nigh-invulnerable dudes in football pads.
Avoiding them is almost impossible until you've killed at least one... and given how many bullets it takes to put him down, the only answer I can think of is using the time bomb.
I could do it with two ration cans, but I only have one. Do enemies ever drop these things? I remember that happening once at the very beginning...

I'm afraid that it really IS just a plain fight of attrition, at least until you kill about two of them. I haven't reached that part just yet myself in the current playthrough, but I remember playing SR a long time ago and thinking this boss wasn't very intelligent at all. Use all the explosives you have and just go for the machinegun afterward. After you killed at least two of them, it gets easier to outrun them until they decide to reset to their default formation before charging you again.

What about enemies dropping rations or ammo, anyone seen it happen? Or am I thinking of one of the MSX games?
