And on the Doom easter egg area you apparently can't destroy the barrels.
2011 technology apparently can't do what 1993 technology could.

You can destroy (or even push, I heard) pretty much noting in Rage. Aside from adapting the game to run also on consoles, I don't know what absurd limitations of Id Tech 5 engine brought to the decision of creating such a static world.

I saw that when I watched the DOOM easter egg for rage on youtube, due to having read this thread.
What was even more sad than the loss of ability to destroy the barrel, was that the barrel was actually flat like a cut board cut out in the doom easter egg.

Maybe they wanted people to remember the Wolf3D engine, since you couldn't destroy anything on that one.

Old Castle Wolfenstein has been referenced as well. A nazi soldier from the game appears in a secret level in Muse Software's Space Taxi. There's also a reference to Rescue Squad and Robotwar, also from Muse.

Man, Wolfenstein 3D is so great on XBLA/PSN. Love that dual analog movement option...it's really the perfect control method for 2.5d shooters (moreso than mouse and keyboard). I farted around with DOSbox and some other stuff to bind some strafe left and strafe right buttons in Wolf3D and Blake Stone in the past, but I never quite got the results I wanted. The controls are what really hold those two back for me.
Also, is it just me or do Episodes 2 and 6 totally not rock? 6 is annoying as hell because the enemy placement is completely predictable but the levels are designed to be as tedious as possible, while 2 is just not good. Thank god there's four other episodes that own.
Damn it, I want to play me some Wolf3D mods now because of this rad article.

Bump! Since it's Wolfenstein 3D's 20th anniversary, Bethesda and some company I never heard of have recently released a Flash port of the game, with the first three episodes included. It's here if you want to check it out: wolfenstein.bethsoft.com/EDIT: They also made a video featuring Carmack himself doing some commentary about the game.

I just finished watching Carmack's commentary, and he messed up two things:
1) When he's mentioning the Jaguar port, he mentions that the system's controller had shoulder buttons. Maybe he was thinking of the 3DO? 2) When he's mentioning the changes regarding censorship on the SNES port he mentions that the blood had to be changed from red to green, and that they had to be aliens disguised as humans or something like that.

EDIT: They also made a video featuring Carmack himself doing some commentary about the game. I love listening to Carmack talk tech. He's such a brilliant guy. It's amazing that he's still not only working on the latest versions of id Tech, but working on things like the iOS port of Wolfenstein 3D. It's always refreshing to see a guy in his position who will do work just because he finds it fun and interesting.

Yep, I am certainly aware of this. Though I didn't want to waste a lot of space covering the "unofficial" remakes, this is not unremarkable.
